Motronic 1.3 swap questions / troubles

Post by GI jonas »

Hey all.I have gathered all the necessary trinkets to swap 1.3 into my 85 e24 and am getting ready to do so.Earlier I decided to start cleaning up the harness I just got and was immediately hitting a speedbump. The one thing I did not consider was the connector for the end of the harness into the fuse box.The original plug has like 12 wires and the 1.3 harness more like 20,with some matching color codes but not enough to lead me anywhere.I tried looking for a schematic of that particular point of the harness but came up short.I assume that some of those wires are either going to get tied together or possibly eliminated?Any help here?

Also the whole point of this initially was to be able to run a miller WAR chip, which I have now decided against. My plan then turned to running a MSPNP which still requires essentially completing this swap as well.My question is.Should I bother with getting the PNP to work or should I just combine my harnesses into one sweet custom harness and just get a standard MS unit? I just like the idea of being able to revert back to stock if necessary easily.

And yes this is for a boosted application...thanks!

I like the idea of having a nice OEM wiring harness.
You can make your own adapter using a standard MS box either way

I agree totally. However I do like wiring and building harnesses, just don't feel like that's what I need to be doing here.I feel like all I really need to know I is just what wires are needed at the end of the round lug into the fuse box?

well i got down to this today and discovered that my e24 fuse box plug has a different arrangement? some of the pins used aren't there and others are mixed up in position....might anyone have info specific to what i might find in the e24? Everywhere i look about this regarding the swap on an e24 just references info found here?

Get the ETM from here: http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm

There's a pinout for the c101 at the end of the pdf, it looks like the e24 connector has a few extra pins so the pinout is slightly re-arranged, but the colors should be the same at the e28.

beware of green sheilded wire it's your vr signal not a normal green wire. That kept me pulling my hair out for 2 weeks before I discovered what I'd done.

I don't believe the VR signal goes through the c101.

OK.So I have definitely determined that as helpful as the links i have found appear to be they are nearly useless for my vehicle as far as this fuse box harness is concerned.Everything I can find directs me to the e28 swap, even searching e24 swaps at BF.I'm not sure what people are finding as pretty much nothing corresponds to my wiring here.

Thanks for bearing with me as an e24 owner on an e28 board...this place just seems to have more tech savvy members

Now after the majority of the day I did manage to track down and isolate 75% of the necessary circuits and what needs to be spliced for functionality of the engine.I have 2 major questions at this point...please go easy on me as my brain is frizzled at this point. :?

A: How am I going to have a working temp gauge? Above it is shown as pin 4.My car has 2 wire sender,brown/green and brown/white? IIRC.Both of which go to the c101,then through the fuse box and into the cabin.

B: I have three wires that went to the "basic" diagnostic port.green/yellow white/black and another,do i just omit these? they appear to go directly from c101 to the port without going anywhere else so I assume yes....that is unless there is a cap on that connector with jumper terminals which i would not remember if so.

Also what I am wondering now is how much of the stock equipment I really need to worry about as I am planning to get the ms2 PNP.Can I simplify a few things or should I concentrate on getting the thing essentially stock first?Obviously it seems ideal to eliminate circuits that aren't needed for the MS to work but I haven't had time to research this enough yet as it is a new change in plans for me at this point.

Thanks for the help so far all!!

I don't know if the e34 gauge sender is different. If its a two pin you would just have to swap in an e24/e28 type sender to work with the cluster.

Doing some more digging I find that its a single wire sender....like most  .The other terminal on the sender is a check light switch, circuit closing at some such temp and triggering the light.I wish I could answer my own questions BEFORE asking.

Also have done some more reading on the MS unit.Man I cant wait to get me some of that action,I guess I didn't realize its essentially just as capable as the standard unit, go figure :D .Funny thing is the unit itself, boost control, needed sensors and some other junk is still way cheaper than the WAR kit with 10 fold the capability!
