Rajay turbo kit... (aircooled VW Parts questions)

Post by alijonny »

So today I picked up an interesting specimen of a vw aircooled dual port engine with a turbo kit installed. It says rajay on the turbo and intake piping, and I can't seem to find much info on the Internet about advertising and who originally sold the kit. Was it an EMPI thing? What was expected out of this kit? It seems like a very simple setup.

This looks like it may be a fun engine to have in my ratty 65, but it has no BOV and no wastegate( and nowhere to put them)
I assume it's nothing over the top for power, but the extra little bit would be welcome on a beetle.

Sorry to those who hate seeing non e28 posts, I figure there are a lot of older guys who know about this stuff. I trust your words before some dipshit on a vw forum.

This is the only video I found that had the same kit, it is identical.

OMG! That thing is running with what looks to be the stock Solex carburetor! That would be a nice place to out a single side draft Weber or Dellorto carburator! I would say you will need deck stand off's with that amount of heat so close the lid.

probably doesn't make enough boost to need one though that tiny carb, and having a suck though carb could make a bov potentially amusing

Oh yeah...I didn't think of that. Maybe I can build a flame thrower BOV?

Do you have a boost gauge? You should change it up a little bit and blow through the solex, or pick up a nice dellorto 40 on ebay for like $150-200.They are amazingly easy to tune, up to 17psi mine has been good and it idles from dead cold at 700  With a little tweaking you can make some really fun power out of a 1600DP. Here is my setup

Nothing to do with that exact kit, but my buddy had a rayjay on his m10 2002, so I don't think its just vw.

I think Rajay makes or made kits for all kinds of cars. I got the engine all broken down, and I need a 1600 dual relief case. I suppose as soon as I find one, the build can commence.
