data link connector 745i e23? Car won't start

Post by charofire »

I am trying to troubleshoot why my 545i wont start. Ran fine today after getting my exhaust upgraded, and then i can not get it to start again. starter does not engage. I thought perhaps my main engine ground was not good but it is intact. So i wanted to bump the starter with the diagnostic cap. It is different from the e28 one, so wanted to see if anyone knew for the 745i as thats the engine i transplanted.

I found a diagram. I can locate pin for "battery", but one of the pins is called "starting pulse for starter" which left me unsure. Jumping between those 2 pins sounds like the way to go?

Yes, that is the way to engage the starter from the diag connector.

Sounds like using E23 harness, if so:

Pin 11 is for the starter. It is the bottom left of that diag connector when standing on the driver side (LHD). I will post a pic here in a few min. You can jump it to Pin 14 or just directly to the battery.

OR just jump the starter to eliminate any of the harness issue. I have had that dumbass spade terminal fall off a few times on my rides which engage the 'noid. Pissed me off so much I converted to B35 starters for that reason alone.
