the most boost on 745 intercooler

Post by rod2190 »

what amount of boost can the stock 745i intercooler handle cooling wise when does it become inefficient and necessary for a bigger one and what size would be recommended for a 635 if going bigger is necessary. thanks for your time

Over on Scottie's 745i site a while back someone did some testing with the air intake temps with the IC and without... needless to say, it was not pretty. Once it heat soaks, the thing becomes useless.

Go ahead and budget for a real IC setup like from TCD. All I have seen for the air to air kits for E24s required extensive cutting/fitment.

Hope it helps.

Yup, ditch it and go TCD or do a custom A/A setup. That stock 745i intercooler is worthless because it heat soaks so quickly.

And since it appears that you are trying to use a complete 745i turbo setup on your E24. Just use the turbo, manifold, and intake. Nothing else is worth swapping over. The dowpipe will also not fit a E24 chassis so you will need to modify it to fit.

thanks for the info i have both an aftermarket air to air and the stock 745 intercooler i was just wondering if it was actually worth the cut and chop work battery relocation etc. planning on running 12 to 14psi

It will heatsoak at any boost pressure. It doesn't have the heat exchanging capacity to keep up. Running more boost than stock is going to exacerbate the problem.

Sounds like you are at almost the same setup as me- e24 with 745 mani and turbo- that's about all that I used - oh and the m106 too-
Hit me on the emails and I can shoot you some pics and parts list of a FMIC setup I adapted to use on my 6.

you are compounding the problem with pushing the stock small turbo to where its less efficient and wasn't designed to be, which reveals the weak change cooling ability

Wouldnt efficiency be marginally increased if the IC was boxed off from the engine compartment?

The intercooler is actually very nicely constructed and works fine in the stock location on an e23 up to about 10psi.
