Megasquirt assistance. MS1v3, any of you MS pro's help me?

Post by DangerWillRbnsn »

Hi guys.

I just picked up a MS1v3. I picked it up from a guy who had no idea what it was, really... and got a great deal on it. It was reported that Peter Florence built this unit..., but the only thing I know for sure is that it had been wired for Ford EDIS. Maybe you can identify what's up from the photos, and let me know what I need to add or change for a M1.3 harness?

Also, can anyone tell me what mods these are on the bottom of the board?

-There is a wire going from tachselect to xg1 which is empty on the other side.
-Wire from IAC 1B to proto area which is attached to some cylinder black and gray tube, and a transistor which is attached to another point on the proto area and a point in the GND. The other side of the gray tube is attached to another one alike it in the 115 spot.
-Wire from c30 to s12c which isn't attached to anything else.
-Wire from JS2 to resistor on proto area which is attached to another point on the proto area.
-Wire from IGN to the top side of D14 which has a resistor which is attached to r24.

Well, I suppose I could just run EDIS-6...

Anyone know if I have to de-mod the EDIS from MS in order to run the BMW distributor ignition? Or can I leave it wired on MS, and just change some settings and run the dizzy ignition?

To run direct coil control you have to reconfigure the board. It probably has a coil driver on it already.

You're going to have a hard time getting started like this. The learning curve is steep enough as is. Starting with someone elses incorrectly configured ECU could be tough. I didn't build my own so I can't tell you exactly what you need to reconfigure.

Excellent, thanks Dan. Yes, it's a VERY steep learning curve. I've had an actual migraine for the last two days after all the reading I've been doing on MS. Anyway, I can look through the build/assembly instructions and revert the ECU back to stock. That should only be 5-10 wires and resistors... and a ton of reading.

And yes, starting with an EDIS MS1 is not an optimal start - but I picked it up inexpensively with some fantastic mods included, such as IAC, Boost control, and a few extra drivers, so I'd hate to start all over on a new board over just a few EDIS wires.

Alternatively, I've considered running EDIS on the e28. The only thing stopping me right now is the limited options of mounting a 36-1 trigger wheel to my crank pulley. I've seen it done where fellas have cut off a bit of the pulley and welded the 36-1 in place, but I plan on keeping A/C, and PS so that's not really an option for me. Looks like I can de-mod and run the distributor ignition, or maybe go GM DIS wasted spark...

OR hell, I can just sell it and start over on another board - but that seems counter-productive to me, unless I just get a PNP (at 4x the cost of this setup).

I used the V2.2 board so I'm not familiar with the V3... but from RTFM, it looks like the board should have the Hall/Optical circuit on it if it's setup for EDIS. You would have to change it to the VR circuit to use the Motronic 1.3 trigger wheel with VR sensor. Then rewire the output for direct coil control.

Have you bench tested it at all?

I did the same thing- bought a V3 MS that was set up on a car with ny exact setup... For like 30$ symtech went through it, tested everything, added the extra circuit I wanted and told me what t had. Way worth it so when I hit the key, I knew it worked and if something didn't happen, it was wiring.
They are building my 179 adapter board currently. They really do a great job- I simply don't have enough time with small children and can't stand not moving forward on a project!

For saving myself the headache, I'll call Symtech. Thanks for the tip!

Nosir I haven't. Last night I found a decal on the back with a diyautotune part number on it, which tells me that peter did NOT build this one.

He may get his boards and cases from there, though. Can't hurt to ask.
