What suspension are you running on your boosted E28?

Post by clongo »

BC racing has agreed to sponsor my car with their newly released coilovers for the E28/E24 chassis. I'm trying to figure out what spring rates to run on my car. I'm on cut stock springs with billy sports ATM and the rear squats like crazy causing massive tire rub about 4-5" into the rear quarter. What are you guys running for spring rates? I know if I go too stiff in the rear traction will be even more of a issue. The car is a DD and will see a mix of road course and 1/4 mile racing.

Spax springs & Bilstein sport struts

I don't recall which perch setting my rears are on (maybe 2nd or 3rd from the top). On a hard launch at the strip I've had no rubbing issues (that I noticed).

Car rides a tad rough around town but smooths out nicely on the freeway. If by some act of God I make it to the vintage, I'll take you for a spin.

Take a look at the chart in this thread:

http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?p=334308

The key with coilovers is to have the struts valved to match your desired spring rates. The chart above is what I used as a baseline when figuring out my setup. I run revalved Bilstein sports with 500 lb/in in front and 450 in the rear. It's a very track oriented setup, very firm.

Prior to coilovers, I ran revalved Bilstein HD's with the bright green ST springs. This was a great setup with big swaybars for both the street and light track use with street tires (it was the go-to setup for years before Spax springs came on the market).

Stiffer springs will NOT stop your rear tires from rubbing. Get a wheel/tire combination that fits properly or modify your arches/fenders so they do.

Spax/Billie Sports on Style 5 17" wheels. The combination was too harsh for me, I didn't particularly like it. I might be getting old.

H&R/Billie Sports on 15" e34 wheels and 16" BBS RAs. Rode great, but the rear spring rate was a little too soft.

Thanks for the input guys. The struts will be valved to whatever spring rate is chosen through BC Racing. I wound up going with 500 front and 450 rear. They should be here in 2 weeks so once installed I will do a full writeup/review on them.
