Very nice! That electronic throttle body really gives a much cleaner look. :alright:

Engine bay looks nice and clean. Where did you route the valve cover line too? And how much boost are you running?

Currently its running to a filter. But i have a catch can i plan on installing it soon.

Had it on a Dyno dynamics today and did
NA(Before turbo install) did 140whp/170wtq
235whp/280wtq@7psi

Ran into some fueling issues with my in-tank pump so i couldn't get the boost turned up :(

Out of curiosity, what software/hardware are you using to perform ECU calibration with the OE VW setup?

-I'm using Vag-com to perform data logging
-Our company has software to force the ECU into programming mode over OBD2
-I've also removed and programmed the chips (PSOP44) but that way takes an extra 5-10mins
-WinOLS to edit the binary file

sounds about right.

are you using a vw knock sensor? one or two? i'm trying to decide what to use on my set up.

2 knock sensors but currently they are over sensitive so i turn the knock retard off.

No....as I said on page one, the M30 is too noisy for the sensors and they would be useless.

You will find that the M30 is so noisy that the sensors are useless.

how did bmw get around the excess noise with the m106? that motor has 2 knock sensors correct? are the knock sensors not being used?
did they use longer rods for less piston rocking? or did they offset the wrist pins? the m30 has cast pistons, which are generally quieter than forged.
can you please expand on your experience with why knock sensors wont work?
in a modern ecu, you can change the knock sensitivity. and change what it considers as normal noise. are you saying that this is not enough?

The only thing I can figure was that BMW "knew" the frequency of what was actual engine noise versus knock. They then filtered this with an algorithm to determine if the engine was actually knocking. Without that sort of filtering it'll always be too noisy of an engine.

Bingo...........if you are depending on a knock sensor for safety you are way wrong. The proper tune should eliminate detonation no matter the boost or demand on the engine.

They certainly know the frequency.

The engine will then show a specific amount of frequency amplitude at non knock conditions. Then the engine is made to knock, the new amplitude is recored and ecu configured to look out for amplitudes above a certain limit/gain.

kind of like this guy did...

http://www.vems.hu/wiki/index.php?page= ... KnockSense

no tune can account for all possible conditions encountered. knock sensors have their place. it is a fail safe. should you rely on them to constantly adjust your tune, no. but, having them there for backup just makes sense... especially if you have put a lot of money into your motor.

being able to have live knock feedback while tuning is very helpful too. if the knock is audible to the naked ear, it is very very severe. many talented tuners use knock headphones. you can have minor knock that is going on and you would have no idea, without some form of monitoring it.

i apologize for taking this thread off topic. this vw engine management is a cool project. i was simply just asking if he used the vw sensors and how many.

Stepping it up!

Post by 240sxpooter »

So adding the turbo has created some extra heat in the cabin which I've tried to reduce with heat wrapping the down pipe. Even with that the heat from summer was driving me crazy and i really want this BMW to be a nice daily driver.

SO!

If anyone has ever looked at a turbo E30 M30 swap there is NO room in the front after Radiator, fan, intercooler.

This is how i fixed that......
Image

Rear mount E28 A/C condenser and fan

Image

Custom A/C lines

Image

Heat sleeved and painted black for steathlyness

More setup pic's

Its a tight fit!

In the end I'm really happy

The whole job ended up costing about 400-500 for everything but now the car blows ice cold AC and makes around 300WHP/400TQ@12psi

Very creative man.
Now you get like what? 7mpg with the a/c on? :D

Also how did you get your 16'' fan to fit? Trimmed it?
Couldn't get a 16'' to fit with my 24x12x3 cooler so had to use two 10''ers.

I had to dent the inter cooler a tiny bit on the top to get my fan to fit. Also i get at least 10mpg
