Ignition map tuning
Does anyone have any advice / recommended reading for tuning an ignition map?
I have come to find that tuning the AFR's are a piece of cake compared to ignition and i'm convinced there's a lot of power missing from my car because of an ignition map that's too conservative.
I have access to a dyno, which i've heard makes tuning ignition much easier but I want to have my act together when I go.

I'm running 16 degrees at 200 kpa, 13 at 230 and 9.5 at 260. Car doesn't exceed 1.45 bar on high boost.
I would add in a ton of advance at lower RPM too. You don't have to worry about detonation until it starts to get into the powerband, and you can use relatively aggressive ignition advance to help boost low-mid torque.

That's what I started with, the map he has is from a car with a different cam thought and it just didn't feel right.T_C_D wrote:Peter will have an excellent off boost map.Patrick McHugh wrote:How about off boost? Should I just find a stock map and match that?T_C_D wrote:I would say there is room for more timing on boost. Start with 2 degrees at a time.

Is the M30 pretty similar to the M20 in regards to timing?turbodan wrote:I'm running 16 degrees at 200 kpa, 13 at 230 and 9.5 at 260. Car doesn't exceed 1.45 bar on high boost.

I may be running a modified version of your map right now, would you mind sending it to me so I can compare?turbodan wrote:Similar. The B34 seems to like a little more, so my M20 map would be on the conservative side.

I looked at a bunch of maps today and I felt that I was running too much advance at very low RPM. I don't run in that area of the map except when blipping the throttle, but if you like to lug the engine around something like this might work better. Seemed to feel better to me while I was tuning accel enrichments.

Cool, thanks! That's my next task, there's a bit of a delay when I hit the throttle quickly, almost as if the accell pump isn't working on a carbed car. I've fooled with the enrichment wizard a bit but it hasn't made a difference.turbodan wrote:I looked at a bunch of maps today and I felt that I was running too much advance at very low RPM. You need lots of road an a helper to drive the car and hold it at various power profiles as you tune on the computer.Scottinva wrote:I wish we could get an eddy current adapter for the dynojet at my work. You can see the torque at given load points without recording a run, it would be the ultimate way to tune the map. The whole map.
I took another shot at it recently. I like the way its working but its not quite perfect. I'll post what I've got later on if you want to try it out. Regular TPS based AE just plain sucks until the engine is warmed up. EAE has tremendous potential there. I'm going to keep working on it. The more I mess with it the better I understand how to make effective adjustments.ianwood wrote:Turbodan, did you ever figure out good EAE settings or are you using the less complicated enrichment?
Yes, please do share. I actually kept the EAE on the turbo eta after playing with it a bit. It had issues but was still better than regular AE especially on the track. Working on a new build turbo seta stroker for another E28 track car. Details soon.turbodan wrote:I took another shot at it recently. I like the way its working but its not quite perfect.
