oil in the cold side turbo charge pipe

Post by grey ghost »

I had the turbo cold side charge pipe off a little while ago and there was about 1/4 quart of oil in it. I take it this signifies that my turbo is toast.

Someone please confirm.
If said turbo is toast, I may just sell the old girl.

It sounds like the crankcase may be pressurizing and forcing oil through the CCV into the intake. Even NA engines get that when they get a little loose.

I had that same pipe off on Sunday and it had the typical oil residue from the breather, this was a puddle in just three day.

Cold side seal rarely fails on a turbo. More likely excessive crankcase blow by.

Thanks Mark. I'll look into that. But as for now, I want to get a better understanding on why all of a sudden this is happening now. The system has been that same for the last three years....

You may have just caught it at a point of excess. Recheck it in another week and see what it looks like. I pull pipes off 10k mile cars that are full of oil. It's all a result of closed crankcases. A sure fire way to see what's going on is to install the catch can and separate crankcase from intake, run it and then check to see if the oil is gone.

I've always had oil in my turbo intake tube. It was there with the 745 and it's there with the 535. I think that's just normal for our versions of PCV systems which consists of a breather tube and a vacuum line directly to manifold vacuum.

I understand that 100%. Whats got me is the amount that collected over a three day period, while over that last three years there has been only the film on the lining of the piping...

I notice I have more oil when I do multiple boosted accelerations which are immediately followed by a sudden deceleration. I also have more grins so I guess it balances out.

Curious, where does a catch can go on the m30?

I mounted a Moroso dual inlet catch can on the left motor mount arm.
