No offense intended, Ron. Just clearing up a common misconception, of which I myself have been guilty of in the past. Your builds have been an inspiration to my own, and although it's coming together nicely, it'd never stand close to anything you've produced. Not to mention, I still have to reluctantly inform inquisitive minds that it's not a genuine Hartge, and that pains me.
It'd be a damn shame to miss out on the knowledge, and eye candy you share with us all, so don't think you're getting out of here that easily.
And I remember one of my first posts here seeking a seat motor for an "M5 Recaro seat". I spelled Recaro wrong in the title to boot. You want to talk about getting flamed from the guys... I stormed away from here that day, for maybe a day or week, but here I still am, for better or worse!
Is it correct to have the scalloped rear headrests? I noticed Trey's car has scalloped rears with Recaro front seats too. I want to keep it correct, but I like the look of the rounder, euro rear headrests.
It's been a while, Being a new parent means, not much time or money for the projects.
Time for an update.
Spent the last several months resealing the transmission and figuring out it's quirks. Luckily, almost all the seals and gaskets were still available from BMW. The trans was stuck in gear when I got it, and the center selector shaft bushing had come loose with some damage to the bore that the bushing fits in. The selector shaft was also slightly bent. It appears that it had been rebuilt before, the synchros were in great shape, but whoever did it shouldn't be working on these transmissions. just got the transmission back in tonight. Even being a 2-piece, it still sucks installing it while on your back. Also curious, what's the consensus on fluid type in a dogleg?
Tomorrow night I will attempt to install the head. I just happened to have a B35 head in my garage(same as was in the car), just had to swap the distributor drive and coolant fitting at the back of the head.
I'm still on the lookout for the right set of wheels, but doubt I can afford them if they surface. For the time being, I'll be running a set of period correct 16" Momo Type 4000 5-spoke that I had laying around.
I hope to get it running by the end of the month, but it's looking doubtful.
That's a positive update. Looking forward to more.
For oil, 1qt of Redline MTL and 0.7qt of 80wt gear oil. That's what Carl Nelson from La Jolla Independent recommends. It's worked well for me over the last few years.

Good to know, I've been reading a lot of conflicting information.

Some H5SP that rotted away in a field.
I got an email from a friend who is considering purchasing the h5sp motor. I know the mechanic who has had the motor stored away for years. Ive never seen it just heard about. Its in florida. My friend may have purchased it by now. Stay tuned my friend wants to do a build with his son.

I thought that car was destroyed. The motor was stored away? That would be interesting.
Been a while since I've posted an update, almost exactly 2 years. Lots has happened, so I thought I would get you guys caught up. Moved to Oregon, bought a house.
Slowly was putting the car back together from the initial teardown. Long story short, it runs and drives, kinda. The bottom end is still questionable, I think it was also damaged from the overheat. Runs very poorly cold, won't idle, runs better warm. Had to install an oil catch can due to all the blow by .
Transmission shifts ok, but sometimes will get stuck in 1st. Hope I don't have to open up the case again.
Replaced thrust arm bushings, took care of 90% of front suspension slop.
Been spending as much time as I can sorting all the little stuff, but between paying off some debt, and my furnace dying, my Hartge budget is in the red.
I have a bunch of photos of the car in it's current, sad, dirty state, but I'm typing this at work. Will update in a few days.

Thanks!
Actually been here since Aug. '14, but been kind of a ghost since then. Hope to be more active in the future. Would love to get together with some of you fine folks, even though I was a 5erWest '15, I wasn't too social.
Wow forgot about this, good of you to persevere and I hope the day comes soon to have it in great shape as a driver. That blue paint is just too gorgeous, I want to see some rolling pictures of it some day.
We're on the home stretch in the countdown to 5erWest. I have been working hard trying to get the car ready. However, due to several reasons, progress has been slow up to a few weeks ago. I am still working on securing insurance on the vehicle, then I can get a temp tag, since I highly doubt it would pass smog in its current state.
After installing my very necessary "$35 air/oil separator", she is actually driveable. The problem is that I have only driven the car 2 miles in the 3 years I've owned the car, and it hasn't been registered in 5 years. I need to do a lot of shakedown drives to make sure it can make the 70 mile round trip to 5erWest.
Here is the car as of today. Don't mind the dust.

Unfortunately, I waited until the last minute to attempt insurance, and Allstate's system didn't like the Vin. So, now it's taking longer than anticipated, and could be next week until it's actually on the policy. Luckily, my agent is a car guy and is trying to expedite the process so I can make it on Saturday.

Pics and details of the car? or the oil separator?

That's what I was thinking. Hopefully the DMV will go through with it, however, the Regs are kinda vague. And, only one plate!!! Wooo!!!
I did it with my track car last month and it was really easy. I just told them that it was mostly a track day car and occasionally would see the street to "exercise the engine" The DMV clerk saw no issue with it and issued my plates.

The car please!
Anything specific you'd like to know that wasn't mentioned earlier in the thread?
