Soup to nuts lower price build advice wanted
I have a generally good runing 86 535i and am considering the possibility of a turbo. I'm interested on points of view on a simple, bulletproof, LOW COST yet decent performing (quick spooling) daily driving turbo setup. I have 93 octane readily available. I'm not looking to get all the parts (including clutch) at once but am looking for deals on all components and do all the assembly except some exhaust welding. What parts are generally reuseable and when is it advised to refurbish or go new? If you were limited to say $3000 what would you do? $2000? Is even less possible ? I would consider keeping Motronic or upgrading if it was cost effective.

Buy an old 745 for the m106 motor and other parts, then megasquirt, some injectors, clutch. I bought an 81 e23 w/m102 3.2L for $500. Then I found an 84 m106 motor at a wrecking yard for $500. Deals are out there, you just gotta find them.

Contact me. I have lots of used TCD parts. Stay away from 30 year old 745i parts. The WG are usually junk. Turbo is extremely slow to spool. You can do much better than 745 parts with your budget.

I think I will give you a call after I do my 1.3 and fuel pump conversions. I'm pretty sure megasquirt is the way to go no matter what turbo setup is used but correct me if I'm wrong.

Depending on power levels & your desire to 'tweak' things to maximize your build, MS might be the way to go.foolish wrote:I think I will give you a call after I do my 1.3 and fuel pump conversions. As for turbo parts, Todd is a straight up seller. I've sent him a couple paychecks over the years.
