Reviewing the FS ad for the car took me back to this thread - awesome build on an awesome car. Wish I could see it up close.

12/2
The car had it's second trip to TexFest back in October. That was a fun trip & the car ran well. I'd venture to say even with the 2.79LSD it surprised a couple M-cars.
I'll update with pics when I have time, but nothing too exciting. I removed the dash & hvac system. All hvac pods have been rebuilt with new diaphragms, the hvac box has been scrubbed & re-sealed internally & against the firewall.
The best part is I finally got my custom metal heater core installed! I can't definitively say I'm the only one in the world with one of these, but I'm damn sure if there's more you can count them on one hand!
I had new ni-cad batteries installed a few months back only to find out the Si lights still weren't working. I shipped the cluster off to a little known person for some massaging. Several capacitors & bad solder joints are being worked over in addition to new odometer gears. This should clear up the wonky temp/gas gauges & get my Si lights back working! It's a little thing but I think it's kinda cool. If they're in there, they should be working! A PO had removed the lights/circuit board all together.
Carpet padding has now been installed along with freshly shampooed carpet! Hopefully I can get the jigsaw center console put back together. If things really work my way, I'll have the rear air working too! The ladies will want to stay cool while chilling in the rear recline seats. The passenger rear window now works thanks to Greg in TN!
Short term items to be addressed. I ordered all new air bypass pipes for under the hood, new ICV, custom bulletproof diff mount, install 3.46LSD, possibly revamp the exhaust system & install a piece of stereo. Oh, and maybe smoke tint the windows.

Do not forget that you replaced each diaphram for $6.
http://www.perfanalysis.com speak with George Murphy there. You want the single tit pod diaphragms for almost all of the pods. The diaphragms will also repair part of the dual tit ones for sure. I THINK they can be used to fully rebuild the dual tit ones, but it becomes a time versus money affair there.
Use Mercedes part 124.800.03.75 for the rear vent diaphragm, around $35. BMW's cost is too high and the MB one drops right into place. This is the one beside the heater core itself.
BTW, thanks for the face full of dirt and dust at Texfest from the HVAC system that had been down for 20 years.
P.S. check your messages for a CD player I found laying around. Free to you!

1/15/16 update
I finally got around to installing an AEM wideband & a boost gauge (thanks Todd!). Previously I wasn't too concerned with having these as I dont get to crazy into boost since there is no rrpr currently installed/tuned to.
This weekend I'm hoping to make time to remove the 2.79 & get this 3.46 action going on. A small part of me is tempted to source a 3.73

Finally! 3.46lsd installed with new speed sensor & a beefy super eta diff mount courtesy of Blunttech. Will drive the car a bit more & report back. I did one mild pull & it definitely scoots. Not quite as crazy as when I had the 4.10 installed, but this f-er moves!

Replaced the failed in tank pump with a Chebby Vega unit. Awesome stuff! I'm still tweaking afr, but hope to have some major developments in the coming month.
Re: A turbo is born in Nebraska! e23 content
excited to see what the "major developments" are

I luv me some Chebby vega pump. How much did it mess with your AFR?Nebraska_e28 wrote:Replaced the failed in tank pump with a Chebby Vega unit. Awesome stuff! I'm still tweaking afr, but hope to have some major developments in the coming month.
Re: A turbo is born in Nebraska! e23 content
I don't know much about afr BUT after he installed the pump the car pulls!! I was smiling during the drive.
Re: A turbo is born in Nebraska! e23 content
I didn't know it was an upgrade, just knew it worked as a replacement. Might have to trade in-tank pumps with mi padre now....TurboE28 wrote:I don't know much about afr BUT after he installed the pump the car pulls!! I was smiling during the drive.

I was chasing an AFR issue prior to installing the new pump, although I'm curious if the failed lift pump I removed was causing a slight restriction.LeiseyJr wrote:I luv me some Chebby vega pump. Did you finally get the car to idle correct without going super lean at cruise or in boost?
Re: A turbo is born in Nebraska! e23 content
Sorry, I should clarify. What I wanted to convey was that after he installed the pump we went for a quick test spin. I've never ridden in a turbo charged BMW before so to my amazement it was really friken fast. I don't know the difference between pumps or what he is chasing down.LeiseyJr wrote:I didn't know it was an upgrade, just knew it worked as a replacement. These 'major developments' are still in the works. My workload has kept me busy, but I'll circle back to it soon!
Though the 'major developments' are delayed, there has still been progress. Enroute to work the other week I picked a fight with a Maseratti douche. It was rush hour so we didnt see an end result, but he was shocked to say the least. In effort to enhance my daily commute, I feel it necessary for some light tune up work. This should prove handy the next time I need to put some yuppie prick in his place.
After adjusting a simple valve adjustment, I figured I'd take things a step further. MLS & ARP studs (thanks Todd!) After the head was back on, the top timing cover was fitting a bit more snug than I was comfortable with. I had a machine shop mill .015 from the bottom & it's perfect now. I suspect the head was rebuilt by the previous owner & skimmed slightly. In doing so, they neglected to skim in with the cover on & this created a slight offset. Today I'm hoping to grind just a hair off a small part of the valve cover that's making contact with the studs. Should have things buttoned up by the end of the week. Will put a few miles on it & then re-torque the head bolts just to verify.
Yes I did prior to tearing into the car for 'upgrades'. I removed the UFO sized water pump pulley & installed a late smaller diameter unit. This helped tremendously with coolant temps & afr. I'm not saying it will work for everyone, but in my case I should've done it a long time ago.offroadkarter wrote:Did you finally get the car to idle correct without going super lean at cruise or in boost?

Re: A turbo is born in Nebraska! e23 content
After having the timing cover shaved, I found that my valve cover was making slight contact with the arp nuts in the middle & the front. The threads are flush with the head of the nut, so interference must be the nature of the beast. Funny thing is after this happened, it occurred me I once before saw a VC with 2 holes drilled in it & wondered why the hell would anyone do that. Well now I know...
Before you ask, yes all shavings have been cleaned from the cover prior to install.

The car is back on the road & close to being ready for more boost. I needed to have the fuel injectors rebuilt & found a place local with an excellent reputation. With the assist of member TurboE28 I was able to avoid some of the wretched traffic.
Yes I'm still on the stock turbo for now, but that may change.

Over the holiday weekend I put about 3,300 highway miles on the ole 7. Zero coolant loss & maybe used 1/4 qt of oil (maybe). The car ran like a champ!

Are those studs really old (like 10 years) or did you just buy them from me? They are missing the allen recess for easy install.

Got them from you. I knew they'd come in handy someday. After chasing thread in my head, I did a double nut on a couple of them to recess.T_C_D wrote:Are those studs really old (like 10 years) or did you just buy them from me? They are missing the allen recess for easy install.

Looking back at your post, you listed Tq sequence 40/60/80. I did 30/60/90 from the ARP site. Are the earlier studs slightly different in tq values?
Re: A turbo is born in Nebraska! e23 content
That's odd. They changed production. I wonder if that's why you had interference issues. 30/60/90 is the revised specs.
