Start with an i head swap. Since you have an 88' it will be an easy conversion. A lot of guys with m20's are running Holset HX35 turbos off Dodge Diesels with good results. They for the most part are all using megasquirt too for tuning. Do a search on R3vlimited once you are done searching here

Easy way to do it for a 250-300 crank HP build would be a GT2560R, stock fuel injection, blow through AFM and a BEGI RRFPR. Very easy, stock reliability and driveability. Easy to scale up from there as needed too. Motronic can run up to at least 10 or 12 psi with intercooling and pump gas before you really need to pull timing with either a chip or standalone injection.

Those were the good old days. The first 7 psi is the easy power that requires little to no additional work or compromise. Car just hauls ass.

People talk shit on the old school begi setup but I would run it that way too.
For a noob that's the best setup. Perfect start, perfect idle. Drives like stock n/a.

Clutch. Stock clutch is going to completely melt at 5psi.
Expensive as shit so that's a chunk right there even for 300hp.
Get the clutchnet stage 1 from tcd it's a total stock feel.

You put the i head and intake manifold on there @ 10psi it's not 300 but maybe 250?
Feels sick, drives stock. Beat on that shit like stock it'll take it for 100 years straight at such a low power lvl.

A good stock clutch will hold at least 7-10 psi. That was my experience.
