Manual trans (swapped) diesels...
SO I have a noise. It's a loud almost growl. I've replaced the pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and it's had THREE different 260/5 Getrags in it.
What gives. Same noise. No crank end play. You push the clutch in and it stops. With the car in the air the noise is there in all gears, clutch out. It drowns out the diesel rattle sitting at a light and seems to get worse when the car has been driven and is nice and warm. Shifts fine, nice and smooth. It's a brand new M21 flywheel. Full fluid. No metal in the old fluid. The trans in it I put Redline MT-90 in. The one before that had a ATF/oil mix that I swapped for Redline MTL in an attempt to mitigate it with thicker fluid.
Is it just the "getrag rattle" but made louder/worse when attached to a rattly diesel? It's seriously annoying.

Re: Manual trans (swapped) diesels...
Not the most helpful response but if you don't have any sound deadening in there between the trans and the body, and between the body and the carpet interior, lots of sounds come through!
Re: Manual trans (swapped) diesels...
Off topic I'd like to ask what is the diff ratio you are running?
My uses would be for highway cruising, not racing, so longer gears are what I'm after.
I ask as I'm about to embark on this swap with my diesel soon. Still gathering parts, will be using a G260.
I saw some of your youtube vids, all are late in the evening! I'd love to see some during the day, as well as a point of view in the cabin.
Cheers.

I think all that deadening is there. It's really noticeable outside the car too.
This one has a 3.25LSD. 80mph I'm just under 3k in 5th.
I've been playing with the boost and fueling recently. The back of the car is BLACK now.
I'll see what I can get for vids. Car won't be in my possession too much longer methinks.

Off topic, but do you still have one of those 260/5's? I have a friend looking for one to stuff in a 84 diesel continental we're taking to the roadkill zip tie drags next year.
On topic: How new is the clutch/pressure plate? I saw you mentioned everything around it except that.

Re: Manual trans (swapped) diesels...
Sounds like the input shaft bearing, the input shaft bearing will always rotate when the clutch is engaged. Sounds like you have gone through three transmissions so that would isolate it as something wrong with the engine/tranny alignment. I know from the experience with my 4 speed muncie setup in my car that dialing in the bell housing is critical, proper crank alignment and mating surface. Not sure if this is applicable to bmws(i have never had an issue)since you dont have removable bell housing I know that gm's have the option for offset dowels and that shims are also required sometimes.

I still have one, but figured I'd hold onto it for the next e30 or TD I find cheap with an auto trans.offroadkarter wrote:Off topic, but do you still have one of those 260/5's? I have a friend looking for one to stuff in a 84 diesel continental we're taking to the roadkill zip tie drags next year.

Clutch a PP are fine. Used units, but I can't think of anything that would make this noise. I'll have to get a good sound clip.
Revving the engine over 1k and the noise goes away. It's only at idle.

Either install a euro 524td duel mass flywheel, install a brand new G/260, or swap the automatic back in it. Those are your only 3 options to get rid of the noise. Both of my swaps that used the single mass flywheels made the same noise.

Interesting. I didn't know they had dual mass FWs in those. This car got a brand new single mass euro FW for the TD, from the dealer (PO worked for the dealer).Jon2830 wrote:Either install a euro 524td duel mass flywheel, install a brand new G/260, or swap the automatic back in it. Makes sense though. I know he fought with the noise as well.

That description often means the throwout bearing is bad. Another possibility is misalignment between the pilot bearing and transmission input shaft.slammin_e28 wrote:SO I have a noise. Re: Manual trans (swapped) diesels...
Hi. I have converted two 524td`s to manual and have experienced the same noise from both. Only at idle. I have used the same gearbox in both cars, but when I changed to a brand new clutch, the noise disappeared. Single mass flywheel. Stoch disc, Sachs 618 pressure plate.
The vibration dampening springs in the disc senter will get worn, and the hard vibrations from this diesel engine will transfer to the gearbox and make the gears rattle. Hope you understand what I try to explain. I`m from Norway...
So if you know that your input shaft bearing is OK, you can judge it pretty good while turning the input shaft, I would say a new clutch disc will cure most of that irritating noise.

Re: Manual trans (swapped) diesels...
Two swaps under my belt...the first made the same noise. ON the second, I used a 30mm clutch release bearing. Also, try bleeding clutch slave by hand with pedal depressed. May have a little air in the clutch hydraulics. But at a minimum, use the taller release bearing.
Re: Manual trans (swapped) diesels...
Curious to the outcome. I'm using a 528 flywheel and no noise.
