For speaker holes, they could also use a conduit hole punch rather than body saw.
Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
This car's Minervablau is a bit more teal than the variant I'm using. But still amazeballs.

Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
I visitation rights today.
We decided rigging the car on the full rotisserie was not needed, and instead just go it elevated high enough to do the frame rail repair and get the underside painted.
Realized last time I was there, the antenna hole was in the wrong place. We're relocating it to the correct place. Or maybe I'll just go without. I do listen to FM sometimes.
I promise, I will never jack this car up by its frame rails. And no body else better either!
I will visit paint place tomorrow and view samples.
I still have 2 more days to change my mind on color.
I've fallen in love with Arrow Blue, which is actually the same pigment as Minerva Blue, but without metallic. I learned this from Vance (@3pedalcollector on IG) at Vintage. Nice kid who is lucky enough to 1) be the guy who manages his dad's car collection and 2) owns an Arrow Blue '76 911. We were chatting at Vintage and I mentioned this project. He said "what color?". I said "Minerva Blue". He said "Oh, paint code 304".
Me: "Uh, how do you know that?!?"
Vance: "Because Minerva the same as Arrow but without metallic and I have an Arrow blue 911".
Some Arrow Blue Pr0n:
What does the pea gallery say (or is it pee gallery?)?

Oh, forgot to mention I drove to Sultan to see the car, then to Preston to pick up mass powder-coating. It was hot. Maytag's AC wasn't working (compressor wire had come loose), but damn that car drives nice. With only a driver's seat, it works well for transporting long things like drip rails, subframes, and fuel lines that have just been coated.
Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
I need to do the same frame rail repair to the M535.
I have to add it to rest of the weld repairs. Thanks for posting those pics; it helps visualize and organize it in my mind.

Your damaged frame rail looks mint compared to my crushed frame.
Did you just powder coat chrome trim pieces?

Media blasted first, but yes. Some of that stash was already shadow line, but beat up but most was chrome.Tiit wrote: Did you just powder coat chrome trim pieces?

New to the forum but following. Maytag too. Incredible attention to detail and quality! Thank you for the inspiration!

I believe they are aluminum.
Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
Yes, they are. OE shadow line was anodized black.1st 5er wrote:Tiit wrote: Did you just powder coat chrome trim pieces?

Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
Shadowline wasn't anodized. The pigment would never hold up. Everything I've got is original from an M5 and definitely painted, which stuck since it wasn't painted over anodize. I like the arrow blue, but Minerva would be a nicer color on a sedan I think.

It just occurs to me that you have red, white & blue E28s. (Sorry if mentioned before, these threads are getting long.)
Intentional?

Unintended patriotism...it just oozes out.

You’re really going to daily this thing?! I’m afraid it’s going to be too nice.

It's gonna be too nice NOT to daily imo.Dale3783 wrote:You’re really going to daily this thing?! I’m afraid it’s going to be too nice.

I think arrow blue would suit the car better. Just my opinion. I’m not a huge fan of metallic on these earlier cars. Great progress Charlie, as always thanks for sharing.
Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
100% against Arrow Blue. E28s aren't curvy enough for Arrow. Minerva adds miles of depth and leads the eye around the car way better than Crayola.
Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
Paint was completed last weekend.
I'd post pics. but I promised myself I'd only post pics that I took. I have not yet seen it in person, but the pics I've seen look amazing. I'm hopefully going to have a visit tomorrow morning when I'll be dropping off all the door latch hardware.
Meanwhile, today I got all the suspension and steering bits, as well as all body electrical packed up to take to 425motorsports so they can get going on re-assembly. I'm missing front brake calipers. There are two full sets of wiring; one from the '85 Euro chassis and one from the '88 535is turbo I parted. We will use the best of each. I am in search of a NOS fuse box (I've given up on doing the blade fuse swap... just not enough time to do it myself, and no way I trust someone else to such a hack job). Anyone have a NOS (near tits) fuse box?
It's highly likely I'll be out of town when Dan at 425 needs all this stuff, so by organizing it like this my wife or kid can haul it over there.

I love seeing the neatly stacked and organized plastic bins ready to send over for the build. Can't wait to see some purty blue paint, too.

Re: Project Minerva: S54 powered E28 daily driver
Came to this thread late. Pages 12-13-14 with the photos of all the process at the body shop are just mouthwateringly fantastic. It is pure sculptural work.
One question: What rust-prevention measures are you setting up? I know it's past that point, but for a moment I thought I'd see the entire body immersed in a galvanizing tub...
I'll keep looking around, even if for making myself go *sigh* and *woow*...

Great metal prep, primer, and paint. Oh, and not letting it on salted roads.Foonfer wrote:Came to this thread late. Pages 12-13-14 with the photos of all the process at the body shop are just mouthwateringly fantastic. It is pure sculptural work.

A month with no project updates? That's just rude.

He traded the project for a 2019 Prius after considering the gas mileage of a S54.
