M30 Turbo Cam

Post by e38740imd »

Hi Every one.

to keep it short. does anyone one know of a good cam to recommend for a turbo application?

ive red that the Stock m30b35 264 duration cam is perfect for turbo ( thats what im building). but the the b35 runs out of breathe at 5500 rpm would this be the same in a turbo set up? the intake manifold has been modded to be bigger than stock

i dropped a valve and receieved a new head and its of to the machine shop. i also have Hd Rockers arms so im thinking should i upgrade the cam one time. but i also heard N/A Cams are not good on turbo application so i dont know what to do at this point.

what do you guys recommend is the best route

Thanks!

ps. any Questions on what equipment im using please see page 3 of this link: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/show ... ild-Thread

B35 cam is fine for your setup. Will pull to 6500rpm. Checked out your engine failure pic. Never seen a dropped valve in a m30 before.

The nice thing about B34 and B35 cams is that they give you low end torque to get the turbo spinning, then the turbo helps bring you to max rpm. Bang for the buck they are a good choice, although yu could do better with a turbo cam, the bang for your buck factor isn't great.

Due to the nature of M20/M30 they aren't screamers at high rpm so the stock cams really are good enough unless you are getting into in depth modification of intake, head/valve sizing, compression, etc etc...

An adjustable cam gear is nice, and cheap. I have mine set a few degrees advanced which picks up the bottom end a little, but I'm done at 6200 rpm. I'm running an 84 m106 cam, not sure how it compares to m30b34, it maybe the same grind. Anyone know?

Yea I was quite sad when that happened. I just sitting at a red light and the car just shut off. Was easily able to find a head but dam. Good thing I kept a few spare blocks

And the head was rebuilt in 2013 or 2014 with some machine work. That's why it's so clean after 5 or so years. . So I'm kinda upset about that too. All well

The machine shop is going to pressure check resurface and clean a cylinder head. As much as I want to send it I'll just have him install rockers and locks. And then send it!

i have the cat cams turbo cam it ok but it dies at 6,5k.
if i where to do it again i'd try something that revs out more or maybe it's just the crappy intake manifold.
