5 Speed Swap Flywheel

Post by OilBurner524TD »

I've been cruising the forums for a while gathering all the information I can about doing a 5 speed swap on the 524td. The only part that seems to be inconsistent is the issue of the flywheel. (Besides sourcing a Euro spec one) My question for the folks who have done the swap is, what flywheel and starter combo are you running?
I found this on ECS and it says it fits the 524..

It seems to have holes for the 6 dowel reference pins..
Any thoughts, concerns, comments, extra information is very much appreciated.

Also, if current inventory list is missing anything please chime in:

Entire 528e Manual trans donor vehicle
New clutch
New master/slave cylinders
New trans mount
New seals/bushings for Trans

I have been looking at this kit as well, the only parts I have left to get. Flywheel, clutch, and driveshaft. I dont see anything wrong with this setup? If you price out parts separately they add up to about this kit anyway, hope it holds up though.

It'll fit, it'll run fine, but the diesel rattles pretty noisily in idle with the clutch out. There's a reason the factory manual diesels use the dual mass flywheel.

i just did a swap and i am using the flywheel from a M50. It is a dual mass. And i am using the factory starter (for the 524td)

Your tachometer will not work anymore since you dont have the 6 small pins needed to trigger the sensor on the M50 flywheel

also the position sensor will not work making for some rough starts until you disconnect the 2 wire plug that runs somewhere from the diagnostic port to the bottom of the fuel pump is disconnected

So my question now to the group is,
The timing mark dowels on the original flywheel; are those removable? The new single mass flywheel I bought seems to have similar machined holes in it. I have yet to tear into the 524td and don't have that flywheel sitting right in front of me. It seems like it might be even easier than imagined if that is the case.

I swapped the dual mass flywheel for a single mass and regret it, at the time a dual mass was like 2x the cost of a single mass but now Luk offers a dual mass for like $200.
