Issue with clutch pedal travel

Post by rickellerbee »

Hello,
I have an e28 M5 S54 swap and the clutch pedal travel to full clutch engagement is very short. It seems like if I let the clutch pedal off the floor just an inch or two the clutch is fully engaged. This makes it really hard to manage at stop lights, and god forbid if I'm on a hill.

Has anyone had this happen ?

Could be air in the line(needs to be bled), clutch slave cyl, clutch master cyl, or the pedal bracket is flexing or cracked. We had the same problem with our M5. I didn’t see any cracks but the bracket was definitely flexing. We added one if these and it got much much better.

We are still having some full disengagement issues, but that’s probably going to require changing the cylinders.

It can be hard to get air out of the system if it's been allowed to fully drain. I tried doing most of the tricks, pressure bleeder, manually pushing the slave cylinder plunger while trying to angle it so air travels up into the pipe before reconnecting and pumping the clutch pedal, what finally did the trick that I saw recommended here was to connect a hose from the front caliper bleeder screw to the slave cylinder bleeder screw, then undo both and pump the brake pedal.

Be careful with the slave cylinder pressure when not connected to the transmission, pressing the clutch pedal or pumping a pressure bleeder too high will make it explode.

I'd second the clutch pedal bracket. If the system hasn't been opened recently and you're not losing fluid from a leaking slave then it's likely this is a strong culprit.

Make sure the bleed screw on the slave cylinder is pointing DOWN!  The hole goes to the top of the cylinder inside when it is mounted correctly.  With the bleed screw aimed up you will trap air in the cylinder.
