FS: PRICE DROP: S38b35 (E28 M5) Engine and Drivetrain
Are you interested in building that “M5 clone”, getting a S38b35 core and a bunch of spares, or doing a S38b35 swap in something like an E9 or? Read on…
Fine Print: All parts are being offered for sale as a package – highly prefer not to separate. Parts are located in Broomfield, Colorado (just outside of Denver). Will not ship, will not sell unless you see the parts in person, cash only. I do have a full time job and therefore appreciate your patience in the time it may take to reply. I will reply to all inquiries in the order received and am happy to address any questions, provide more details/pics, etc. to serious buyers. Parts are as pulled from the car and have not been cleaned, prepped, etc.
Price: PRICE DROP: Asking $4,000 OBO (was $6,850) for all parts pictured/listed below. Engine stand and all storage totes included.
Contact: Eric at e_schauble at hotmail dot com for more information and to set a time to discuss the parts by phone or in person.
Parts for Sale (also see the “backstory” below for more info): S38b35 engine and drivetrain parts included and as pictured (major parts) below:
- S38b35 Engine with 172,XXX miles (full comp/leak done prior to removal and pre-removal dyno run done – see below for details)
- Throttle bodies
- Intake Plenum and airbox
- Spark plug wires
- Starter
- US headers and catalytic converter/center section
- Engine and air-conditioning radiator(s), oil cooler
- Water pump, power steering pump
- Master brake cylinder
- ALL heat shields
- Front subframe (with welded steering box insert/reinforcement)
- G280 transmission with weak 2nd gear syncro. Upshifts through the gears fine, grinds during a rapid 3rd to 2nd downshift above 30 mph. Tried to capture this on video (see below) but transmission did not replicate grind. Transmission is functional but highly frustrating when driving spiritedly (as can’t consistently do a 3 – 2 downshift at speed).
- Clutch and flywheel (unk mileage but 172,XXX where on ODO when removed)
- Driveshaft
- Rear subframe with swing-arms
- LSD and half shafts
- Full M5 wiring harness (labeled and organized) and ECU w/ Dinan chip installed
- Other misc. drivetrain parts not pictured (engine mounts, coolant hoses, front suspension pieces, pedal box, etc.). Full inventory available upon request/need.
Pictures:
Parts NOT INCLUDED: MAF sensor, steering box, sway bars, front strut housings, springs/shocks, cruise control module, shift linkage, brake calipers/rotors, brake bomb, wheels, any interior parts, any body parts/panels, etc.
Engine details: Motor was pulled with 172,XXX miles in January 2015. Condition of timing components unknown and no documentation/paperwork of any update/replacement of timing components available. Results of a compression/leakdown test performed prior to removal (2/20/2013) were as follows, (motor internals have not been inspected and head has not been separated from block):
Cyl 1/Cyl 2/Cyl 3/Cyl 4/Cyl 5/Cyl 6
Compression: 140/155/155/165/155/170
Leakdown: 58%/35%/30%/40%/27%/28%
A “pre-dyno” was performed in September 2014 at Boost Creep (Longmont, CO) on a Dyno Dynamics (“heartbreaker”) dynometer to provide a “baseline” for comparison following engine transplant to determine the amount of performance I gained post engine refresh. Results of the dyno (from the motor for sale) were: 204 peak HP/188 peak ftlb at the wheels, altitude corrected.

Backstory: I have been a long time voyeur/information/parts gather here on the MyE28 forum though a minimal contributor. I am fairly active in the local (Denver, CO) BMW scene (a few here can vouch for me) and am a long time Bimmerfile. I picked up my E28 M5 in September of 2011 (vin#WBSDC9308J2791529) and shortly after I got it home I realized that the G280 transmission had a weak 2nd gear syncro. A local opportunity presented itself in 2013 to pick up a “second/parts car” E28 M5 (vin#WBSDC930XJ2791631). This car had seen better days (rear quarter panel damage poorly repaired, severe rust, neglect, etc.) BUT had a good running G265 transmission swap. So I purchased this car with the intent to part it out, swap the transmission, and keep the drivetrain for a “future” E9 S38b35 swap. As I wanted to refresh the motor in my M5, I decided to do some diagnostics on both motors (both had similar mileage 170-180k) to see which one was the better starting candidate. Turned out that the “parts” car had the better starting motor to work with. So, after it was all said and done, the “parts car” was completely stripped down, all parts tagged and stored, and the motor was refreshed with some nice performance upgrades (S38b36 cam, adjustable cam gear, EU headers, high flow center section, etc.) while I still drove my M5. After the “parts car” motor was refreshed, I swapped it with the motor from my M5 in the winter of 2015 and the motor from my M5 (the one for sale here) has been sitting on an engine stand in my garage since. Well, the future prospects to do an S38b35 swap in an E9 aren’t looking good as I recently decided to add a ’74 2002 to the stable. So, with the desire to keep some resemblance of peace on the home front, all this leads me to where I am today, selling a full E28 M5 drivetrain and spares to help fund my 2002 project. Thanks for looking...

That would be fun but it won't fit without a really big BFH...

Hello,
I am really interested in the Getrag 280 transmission alone.
I am currently fixing my own G280 tranny from my M635CSi.
This transmission has a bad 4th gear wheel and with your transmission I can fix it.
Could you please contact me via e-mail at arjen@valphen.com?
I know you don't want to ship and hope to sell all in one package but I hope we can make a deal. It would really help me finishing this project

Arjen,
Thank you for the interest in my G280. Not ready to sell separately at this point but if interest doesn't pick up on the entire "lot" of pats, may be willing. Also assuming shipping to the EU will be very expensive???

That cyl 1 leakdown: would you think it was head gasket? Also do you know if those things are still around? My pops was doing the head on his m6 a while back and was told by BMW NA that he bought the last one, period.
Re: FS: S38b35 (E28 M5) Engine and Drivetrain (Colorado)
thats 204hp on the s38?
weird. is it becauseof the leaky first cylinder

Re: FS: S38b35 (E28 M5) Engine and Drivetrain (Colorado)
It's likely reading low for a few reasons - the age, the first cylinder, etc.e38740imd wrote:thats 204hp on the s38?

But it's also worth noting that that's on a Dyno Dynamics dyno, and they're called the "heartbreaker" for a reason. Stock E46 M3s put down about 255-265 on them, sometimes a bit more. 204 is inline with where that motor should be on that dyno.
GLWS. I'm interested in individual parts if you decide to split it up.

Thanks for the feedback - I have been informed about the "heartbreaker" dyno results being lower than others out there. Send me a PM regarding what parts you would be interested in. If I do decide to split up the "lot" I will definitely let you know.SpasticDwarf wrote:It's likely reading low for a few reasons - the age, the first cylinder, etc.e38740imd wrote:thats 204hp on the s38?

This would be perfect on my 28. Something about the photo that is so satisfying. I can stare at all these parts all day. Good luck w/ the sale! If for some reason you become desperate enough to decide to drop the price to half, give me a holler.

Yep - deposit received and the buyer and I are coordinating pick up of the parts later this summer. The buyer has until Labor Day weekend to pick up the parts so if for any reason they don't pick them up by then I'll let the forum know.
Thanks for all the views-

Do you have the wire harness and the computer available?

Sorry, both are unavailable. Staying in my safety stock.
Good luck with your search, maybe start a search thread for it?
