Hello Everyone! I am selling My 1988 M5, I purchased this car on Bring a Trailer and had it shipped to my mechanic outside of Chicago. We went through all the fluids and replaced fuel pumps+filter and a couple of coolant hoses. I drove it quite a bit February - August putting on approx. 1,000 enjoyable miles In and around the city of Chicago. In March i had body work done which included the front and rear driver side doors, rear spoiler, and front valance getting repaired and repainted. Also had the car paint corrected. Towards late August the car developed a squeal while turning at low speeds, i didn't ever get to completely diagnosing it past checking the PS reservoir before deciding to put it in storage as the noise got a bit louder. Car has been sitting since then in a temperature controlled warehouse.
I replaced:
- Steering wheel (with much nicer condition example)
- Shift Knob
- New OEM front and rear badges
- Clutch slave cylinder
- All fluids - Brake Fluid, Coolant Flush, Engine, Trans, and diff Oil
- New Intank + Aux. fuel pumps
- New Fuel Filter
- New ECU from specialized ECU repair
- Exhaust
Here are some things worth mentioning:
- Car sports all original vin tags.
- Other than the paintwork done under my ownership the car appears to have all original paint
- Odometer does not roll over and is still showing 230,613. I personally have put about 1k Miles on it during my ownership - Previous owner claimed Odo worked up until he parked it the last few years, Documents support odometer was functional up until 2018.
- Completely rust free
- Nice fitting dash cover
- Matching set of Continental tires dated 2014 - Great tread, no dry rot, ride nice
- Wheels could use refinishing
- Interior could use a good detail - i did my best at it could be better
I Received a Binder Full of detailed Maintenance history of the car since new. This car was very well maintained and had major work done from an enthusiast owner who had the car in the early 2000's
- Metric Mechanic Getrag 265 @211K
- Motor was Rebuilt @ 216k
Main Bearings, rod bearings, timing chain, OEM cams, cam gears, pistons, rings, valve guides, rocker shafts rocker arms, oil pump and chain, water pump, alternator belt, spark plugs, filters, slide rail, tension rail, upper and lower gaskets, thermostat, fuel pump, fuel filter, oil filter, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor. Fuel injectors were flow tested and calibrated. All hoses replaced and the coolant system was flushed and cleaned.
Below are some links for the car as well as a gallery of some moments in my ownership and some highlights from the binder. I added some notes to a few of the pictures, paperwork is definitely an interesting read!
Feel free to message me or ask any questions!
This car is a great driver, and doesn’t need much from being a great looking and driving car! Selling due to enjoying my DC71 M535 a bit more than this. Only have time for one E28 at the moment.
Asking $26,500
Car is located in Rockford, IL
***I do not have any current pictures or videos but will update album later this week when i visit the warehouse.

Thanks Tig! That was easy!

Rocker shafts??
The squeal may be a loose belt, groaning is usually related to pressure issues. How was the steering feel? Looks like a nice car. GLWS.
