86' 745i engine

Post by spg900turbo »

Hi i have a 745i turbo engine out of an 86' euro 745i with 200,000 kilometers (about 130k). Complete engine with all the turbo parts included (oil cooler, intercooler, radiator, and piping etc.) I originally planned on putting it into my 87' 535is but realized that one unreliable turbo car is more than enough. I know that just the turbo parts go for $800-1200ish, but not sure how much the complete engine is, so make me an offer. Will get pics up by the weekend.

Wanna trade for a very fast 900T16 with some rust issues? She's making 20 psi boost. Head gasket was done a few years ago. Lot's of performance bits....braided brake lines, group 6 APC controller and muffler. Currently running "test/track" pipe in place of cat, nology hotwires and amp, bilsteins all around, ronal 5 spokers, and extra stockers mit blizzaks, sway bars f/r, new front calipers, I rebuilt the entire front end a little while ago wheel bearings (shimmed properly), ball joints, CV joints and boots, best shifting \, strongest 5 sp tranny I've had in twenty plus years with these cars, new front rotors in the box, new clutch disc in the box, skid plate, Complete extra long block, and lot's more.

just an idea

Andrew.

Willing to trade parts or the whole setup for stahl/bav auto headers, or a schrick cam, or both.

just a question: does anyone know how much power the 745i turbo engine produced?

252 hp @ 4900 RPM. 280lb.ft @ 2200 RPM. Also rated at 27.2 mpg at 75mph. :alright:

I just notice how much torque that is AT AN ASTOUNDINGLY low RPM.

Bet that thing would light up the tires easy in the lower gears, huh. :)

without the turbo, the engine is an m30 tapped with an oil feed for the turbo and oil squirters for the pistons. pretty much the same as an m30

Yes that is WITH the turbo equipment. Without it it's just basically a m30b34.

Ok, thought so, just thought i'd clarify. What I'm going for is an M106 bottom end with a B35 head...

It is going to be fun!

What compression ratio will this give you?

I don't know how many times I can say this but it's a myth despite what BMW claims. Engine makes almost zero power at 2200rpms. BTDT 6 times over. Confirmed on the dyno!

Image

Stock 745i won't spin the tires at all from a deadstop despite the boost level because they have 2000rpm converters and the engine makes no power until 3000rpm.

This may be true Todd, but no one else had chimed in to the question, so I pulled the info out of the owners manual that I bought from you.

Vance,

I was not calling you into question. Just the manufacturers claims.

I wasn't thinking that Todd, just wanted to state that the info was from the manual and not just internet hearsay. I should have also posted that I was curious if the testing methods used in the 80's could have caused the discrepancy that you have show through testing, or if it was an outright embellishment on BMW's part. Also, I'm still curious what the compression ratio would be with a B35 head on a stock m106 short block.

I started a discussion about this in the Forced Induction section...
