I wonder how could they do a complete rebuild without knowing what engine this is? Anyway, really cheap either way...

Okay - I'll ask the admittedly dumb question. How can I tell if my '87 535i has a b34 or b35 engine?

The e28 didn't come with a b35. They were in the e34 chassis 535. The late model 635/735 did come with a b35t also, but I'm not sure of the production dates off hand.

Error...You meant that the E28 did not come with the B35.

BudFox, your 535i has the B34 engine...

Don't these seem sort of suspiciously cheap? I mean, an oil pump costs half what they're asking for the whole engine. Also, they're including a complete gasket set- so the engine's just bolted together with no gaskets now? I'm having trouble figuring out the angle here.

They're surplus. Sounds like they had a hard time figuring out even what they were. They've probably only paid $200/ea for them, so even at these prices they're probably doing just fine.

The quality of rebuilt motors can vary considerably. Before knowing if this is really a deal for someone, it would be necessary to know who rebuilt it, and what parts they used.

I am going to email the seller and see if he will say more about who rebuilt it, and the parts that went into it.

Otherwise, this is just another mystery ebay part . . . .

after woking at a Bmw shop, and seeing a few long blocks come in from stupid people, who dont know how to take careof engines. the ones from BMW Looked the same, but i bet its the same practice no matter who does the rebuild.

but they included a Oil pan, valve cover, spark plugs.

(hey check out who sent them a offer :D )

$150 to ship - not bad.

The oil pump is worth a good bit of the asking price.

Not to mention if they really re-built it or just boiled it out and slapped cheap parts on it to get it out the door without really checking anything.

I agree.

People should be skeptical of things that are sold on ebay, unless you know the seller personally, or from prior transactions. I am not saying deals can't be found, but with something as fundamental as the build quality of the motor, this is not a place where you want to just blindly put any old thing in there. Same thing with parts.

Call me a skeptic, but generally speaking, if something looks to good to be true, it probably is.

And this is precisely what would save a ton of folks from getting burned in the long run. Well stated.
