Winfred,
Did you consider a thinner motor mount on the driver side to stand the engine more upright?
My 79 635 is the same platform as your 81.

i wouldn't get enough tilt before the intake hit the vacuum booster, the b35 intake is about 1/4" from it, the frame rail mod would be fairly easy for me. plus the tilt would probably keep the oil from draining completely during changes without doing something annoying like jacking up the left side of the car, might also put the fan too far out of position so that it hits the shroud

I have done a fair amount of VNT tuning on OE Bosch and Delphi controllers and it is fairly complex, definitely not what I would call basic level tuning. It would require a fair amount of skill to modify the existing code to output the CAN commands. You would also have to have the turbo manufacturers CAN command dataset that it is expecting to see. This is something that might be possible through extensive trial and error (doubtful) and it is also something that usually isn't available to any one other than OE manufacturers/calibrators.

While I agree that it would be amazing to see this work, and would be a massive performance improvement, it is an extremely uphill battle to make it work.
There is a controller on the market that will control it standalone. I'm pretty sure that you set a boost target and go. It's ~$500 IIRC. Obviously you know better than I, but setting a boost target and tuning a PI(D) loop shouldn't be terribly hard to accomplish once you know the J1939 messages it is expecting. Not everyone has access to a CAN logger though.

ok then, let's say a gt35r like George recommended.
which turbine for m30? t3 or t4?
turbine a/r .6, .8 or 1.1?
also has anyone tried the cheap turbos on ebay?
I've read on bimmerforums that all Garretts are made in China & Mexico now? makes me wonder if they're really worth the price?

I would go with a T4 turbine, with something in the 0.58-.6 range if you want a quick spooler (much like a TCD setup).

Where would be a good place to purchase a turbo such as the one mentioned?

You could call Todd at TCD and he can spec you out with exactly what will work for you. He can get you a turbo made to order, with the wheels (both comp and turbine) you want and AR that you choose (or have him recommend).

There are other sources but I doubt many will have as much BMW FI m30 application knowledge.
