Found something interesting today- Top Mount for 745i Mani
Bought some parts today and picked these up.... looking for worthwhile input as i am in the midst of bolting a stock 745i setup (with M106) with tial 38mm, begi, 24lb- nothing spectacular.. but i found this little setup in the bag-
Dont know much about it-except its a BW (KKK) he said it is a K27.2 twin scroll and this setup made 357hp at the wheels on his B34 - and i can believe him, i know the guys at the dyno he went to. He flipped the 745 mani over and used this little piece of engineering clownshoes-
Nothing special - just allows a T04 flange to be bolted up on a stock 745 flipped mani... everyone seen that.
Question is, would I be better off sticking close to a stock setup and use the k27 I have in the correct setup, or do i roll the dice and see what this little thing does top mounted?
(as much as i appreciate it, throwing it all away and buying a TCD setup isnt in the cards- I agree it would be better and i like Todd just fine, I simply have 2 paths to go down currently and would like to keep on track, Thanks)
I tend to believe that this k27.2 has to be better than the stock turbo and i am about to have the DP built, so why not try it out?
info on motor/car -1987 635csi 5spd- M106 motor complete stock rebuild- using 24lb injectors, begi FMU, MSD selectible retard, blaster coil, A/W intercooler (will be putting it on after car is confirmed running correctly) Tial 38mm, 255lph FP-
The goal of this car was to get just around 300 at the crank and be a little more of what BMW should have built in the day (instead of that pesky 24valver). Im not racing M5's or anything like that- but if i have the opportunity to get closer to 350 with very little extra.... well, i just might be into that.

I was hoping someone else had pics too- before i spend the time... But all i have to do is pull the manifold off and flip it as i have the motor halfway out to get the original turbo out... ill get to it this week sometime, but it looks awfully tight. Fortunatly it was on the exact same vehicle, so i know it will fit (with maybe a little force)

The hood clears! I did a little "modification" (hammer my shitty hood) to make the oil feed line fit. I need to get a 90 degree adapter for oil feed. It has so many dents Anyway, a little bulge over the compressor doesn't bother me.clongo wrote:I freaking love you car bonzit. Does the hood clear your setup? Any dyno #'s yet? What are you running for engine management? MS?
No dyno yet. The closest one is like 3 hours away and i have yet to get out there.
And I am on MS. Still working on tuning it. I suck at tuning... It started missing on 2 cylinders, but they slowly come back in as it warms up? Does anyone know what that could be?
Im going to try to flip over the mani tonoght or tomorrow and see if i can get it to fit under the hood- i really dont want to have to recess for it.
Did you have someone make you DP for you? I have the flange, just need the pipe and welder- was going to buy some bends and play with it.
This dude tapped the manifold where his wastegate lined up correctly and bolted it straight to it- pretty straight forward.
I am a little worried about heat though.

The wastegate is super tight against the frame rail. I think I ended up using allen bolts since I couldn't get a socket in there. I can't remember exactly.9mil wrote:Im going to try to flip over the mani tonoght or tomorrow and see if i can get it to fit under the hood- i really dont want to have to recess for it.

I made my DP out of a F350 exhaust with the flange welded to the end.
At least wrap the DP. Mine stays very cool. I still need to get a heat blanket for the compressor.

no I dont have any specs- I ran some of the #'s and it would appear to have come off a small truck in Australia or something- Not to sure..Plate Says:
87802480
hk5089831- 00053
5327 870 7062
Borg Warner- of the Triple K variety
I was playing with the mounting and this is not snugged up as it appears i need to beat the wheel well in to make room- it is just a hair on it. Thinking i am going to take it to my machinest and have him shorten the bend just a touch as there appears to be pretty good clearence everywhere else. Also not too fond of the DP routing either... I guess i could shim up that motor mount a bit, but that seems a bit extreme.
Looks like Hood might even close-
I need to make sure this thing will work before i get too far... I have been googleing with little results- I thought i saw a site with specs on most everything around, anyone have that?

I have some pictures somewhere of a guy who installed an M106 into his UK RHD car, using the flipped manifold route. I'll see if I can dredge them up. For what it's worth, i'll be running the flipped manifold on my e28 also, and have a buddy with an e32 735i running a similar top mount setup, although with a tubular manifold. I'll find some pics.
Which wastegate are you running?Bronzit wrote:The wastegate is super tight against the frame rail. I think I ended up using allen bolts since I couldn't get a socket in there. I can answer that one!
You better have one already as I tired to get one unsuccessfully a few months ago. Paul was very kind about it, but I still ended up making my own... truthfully, i ordered the same parts as george uses and i had to toss in a 45 deg bend too in order for it to work (in the non-flipped configuration) - note: this is for an E24- not E28
I dont want this to come off as speaking ill of Moosehead or anything- there was some issues on thier side appearently and he refunded me my money and was always in good contact- shit happens and he has been nothing by helpful on this forum.
I am feeling more and more skeptical about going the flipped route- especially as i dont know anything about this turbo... I need a re-worked 745i turbo for stick mounting is what i need!

Yeah, sorry about that. I did what I could to get it for you. If these become available again, I'll let everyone know, but for now we are out.9mil wrote:I can answer that one!

My friend .... Have I got the deal for you...BATESY wrote:Im sure you could make it work. probably do what I did and cut and weld to make a shaper bend to clear the 38mm wg. Im pretty sike about this. always wanted a top mounted turbo.
I decided to finish my project in stock form using the stock turbo unit in it's stock configuration... Just to make sure the damn thing runs really... There are too many unknows about the turbo to warrant going down that road without getting at least a baseline first.
Not a problem at all - I should have ordered it way back as I knew I needed it... I used a 45 and a 90 wih a sharpie and nailed it first try- had my fad guy at work weld it up. Got lucky as he'll!mooseheadm5 wrote:

Anyone know where to get trigger signal for my MSD unit? I am thinking I might need a trigger wheel or something off a b35? Haven't looked too deep into it yet- Just in case someone knows offhand- a lot easier that way!
clearance with spark plugs?
For you guys running the 745 flipped manifold, did you have any clearance issues with the spark plugs, especially at the front of the head?
