Engine Build questions.
Hello, i am looking into buying a m30 motor for my 86 528e. Ive been reading up on my turbo FAQ, and now im trying to put some numbers together. First what base m30 motor should i use? Ive read a lot about the b35 but i have also seen a lot on the b34 turbo block. Any differences? My objective is to get somewhere in the 550 whp range. I first need to start out with the swap but that is my objective. I herd stock crank takes about 600hp. Any companies out there to build my top end? any piston combos or head combos i should know about? about the estimated cost of all this. thanks for your help.

If you're asking questions like this ...
The answers to nearly all of your questions are right here on the first page of the forum. Start reading. It'll do you good.
I don't know that anyone has actually found a power limit for the crank itself, so that's about the only answer you won't find.
then I don't see this ...SmokeyJohn102 wrote:Any companies out there to build my top end? any piston combos or head combos i should know about? about the estimated cost of all this.
occurring in the near future for you unless you have deep pockets to pay someone else for the work that such power levels will require. My objective is to get somewhere in the 550 whp range.

550rwhp is my goal for pump + meth. I have a B35.
I am planning on or already have:
1. Holset HX40, $250 used from a dodge forum
2. Good n tight manifold, $800 shipped
3. Spark plugs, 2 ranges colder ~$20
4. Megasquirt v3.57 + harness ~$500 plus a lot of learning and labor
5. NAW 7s wideband controller+ Bosch wideband ~100
6. Tial 38mm wastegate - 180
7. 12x31x3 intercooler + piping (E30) $200
8. M60 Throttlebody $50+ $45 silicone adaptor from verocious
9. Extra silicone elbow $10
10. Ebay BOV + adapter pipe.~40
12. Megasquirt boost control module ~35
13. 284 turbo cam regrind ~ $250
14. ARP head studs ~$200
15. Walbro 255 pump ~$75
16. Single mass flywheel from 528i, resurfaced and lightened, $150
17. Exedy F1 Stage 4 6 puck clutch -$350
18. New Head gasket - $120
19. Isky cams rental - o-ring tool - $60
20. 72lb/hr low z injectors - $200 used
21. Coolingmist base meth injection kit, used - $100
22. tunerstudio registration + MS compatible cable -$60
23. 2 4" v-bands - $70
24. about 14 feet of 4" stainless - $200
25. Oil fittings, 4an feed line 10an return, ~$60
26. 6-coil tower from DIY autotune, new spark wires, BIP373s, ~$150
27. Waste gate flanges, 1.5" wastegate piping, $50
TOTAL: $5025
The B35 casting in later cars is prone to crack. The pistons are the weakest point. I will be making less than 500 ft-lb torque by having the boost creep (megasquirt boost target by rpm) after the torque peak. This way I won't kill my clutch, driveline, pistons, or block by having the insane mountain of mid range M30 torque (torque corresponds to peak internal cylinder pressure).
This total is BEFORE tool costs, stuff I have forgotten, and the "retard tax" I get when I do things twice or false start. I was lucky enough to only have rebuilt costs in my swap, at over 250k my M30 was still showing perfect compression and has the original x-hatching on the cylinders.
I like to think this is a pretty freakin cost effective build - the only outrageous expense was the manifold, and frankly in the E30 it's so tight I was GLAD to have Otis.
