This was what appeared to be a solid manifold and it broke when torqing down #1. It didn't take a lot for it to snap, either. The pic's at a wierd angle but 3/4 of it had been compromised, as is evidenced by all of the black.
I am very glad it broke now as opposed to a more inappropriate time.

Casting defect resulting from the initial machining of the part? Was it ceramic coated or otherwise treated with anything?

I should have mentioned: b34 intake.
I was a little PO'd when it broke but the ramifications of it breaking while under load would be catastrophic. I got lucky.

Looks like its been a pretty major air leak for a while. Probably got dropped at some point and cracked the flange.

You're making me thing I'll need to find a way to squeeze those intake manifold support brackets back in somehow. Dang it.
