Yours definitely came out darker than the one in the B7 Turbo and the M635CSi that I did. It was virtually an exact match from the carpeting under the clamshells that had seen no UV whatsoever.

Please send the hood catches to the plater! That will make it look like it is all new!

Interestingly, the ones I bought new for the B7 Turbo didn't look too far off from those.

Yea, I should have bought a spare set ages ago and sent with my last batch of parts, but forgot. Now I have to wait until I have another big batch of parts to do it...it's just not worth the monies to do individual parts.

Forgive me for not looking back in the thread, but do you have an 8" sub mounted in the rear parcel? I've been contemplating adding something to make my stereo sound less like a 1988 setup. Do tell (or link?) what you have going on there.

I suppose it could be for the hooker to get some fresh air while you take her back to drop off point, but I didn't want to bring all that back up...

It's an old trick Oldskool taught me.

It's something the PO installed. It works quite well and sounds great.



The only thing I don't like is he didn't run RCAs from the head unit to the amp for a dedicated sub amp. Because of this, I can't adjust the sub's level from the headunit. I've considered fixing this, but the reality is it does sound great now and is not needed.

That is a neat looking setup. Is it an 8" or 10"? I do like your idea of being able to control the sub from the head unit. Thanks!

I stink it's an 8". I've never really looked that closely at it, frankly.

That doesn't look like a proper free air sub but I could be wrong, I would imagine it would make more sound in a sealed box with the correct amount of air space. This is only a theory based on my limited knowledge of course.

He didn't have enough time to get the rear window corner done, so that will happen Monday.

Uh, oh.

Ken just called.

He's was having trouble blending the repair to the C-pillar. Original plan was to use two-stage there since two-stage is (supposedly) easier to blend.

When he went to polish it he discovered the paint in that area is thin and he went through it with the polisher.

He doesn't think I'll be happy with a larger blend area back there.

We've made the decision to paint the rear quarters. He doesn't think we need to paint the trunk lid, but we may have to.

To me, this is the worst case scenario for this project: Ending up pretty much with a full respray.

I have to keep reminding myself that the real reason I'm doing this is to get first hand experience going through it. Well, that's happening.

Bummer, still makes no sense to me that you didn't have a full respray done especially at the length you guys have gone to. Seems like in the long run it would be less work. Good luck.

good news is chanel makes a touch-up kit. you'll be fine.

Yep. What can I say? I wanted to preserve the original paint as much as possible.

The best way to preserve it is to cover it up with new!

To me, the worst case scenario is several shades of red on an otherwise nice car. These cars are 30 years old plus or minus. There is nothing wrong with a qulaity re-spray when it is done right.

Yea, that's what I meant with my worst case comment above. I was comfortable with bumpers and valences mis-matching ever so slightly. I was also comfortable with the hood. But vertical panels? Eek.

No, you should just do it right.

My unsolicited opinion (hey, it's a forum!) is, once you're painting any part of the unibody, the percentage of paint which is original is pretty much irrelevant. A hood or bumper respray for rock chips is, in a way, maintenance, but the degree of work you've done to the car so far disqualifies it from an "original paint" description as-is. In which case, the full repaint will probably give you an overall better result.

But, to each his own. My E34 has slightly mismatched panels after a lesser-quality fender repair and it bugs the shit out of me. The car isn't worth much but I am still debating pulling out the dings and spraying it all anyway.

My car has four mismatched panels, I have been thinking about driving it to the scrap yard. I don't see any other option.
