Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
it's more of a rectangle. those operators were never good with geometry.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Decision made: Full respray.
Ken's pulling trim now and we're gonna pull the windshield tomorrow early. I was waiting for the windshield in there to get broken before replacing it (it's pitted but OE) but this will force my hand. I have a brand new OE green-top windshield for it.
This also means I will put on my real shadowline trim vs the lame vinyl tape I've been living with.
Plan is to have it done Friday afternoon so it can sit all weekend. Then I'll have to get it to my auto glass place early next week.

Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
That doesn't seem like sufficient time to do the bodywork, block it, let things settle and then spray paint and let it cure. Seems like you're rushing it.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
I hope you aren't getting it done before 5er. What christ said.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Primer today. Block / sand tomorrow. Paint Friday. That's too quick?
Remember the current paint/bodywork is pretty much perfect.

I keep wanting to respond to this; but I know that no matter what anyone says, you are going to do it your way. Best of luck.cek wrote:Primer today. Block / sand tomorrow. Paint Friday. That's too quick?

Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Well, I didn't consider that the bodywork was perfect. I have never owned a car that nice before. I'd just wipe it down a with a tack cloth and spray it but I'm sure Ken might spend an extra day on it.

Really? You really don't think I value your, Brent, and Chris's input?OcCoupe wrote:I keep wanting to respond to this; but I know that no matter what anyone says, you are going to do it your way. Best of luck.cek wrote:Primer today. Block / sand tomorrow. Paint Friday. That's too quick?

Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Regardless of whether or not you value it, you tend to not follow it. There's no need to reengineer a process when so many people have proven the right and wrong way to do things. If you want to rush it then by all means rush it. There are things that need to take their course and you will not allow that to happen by rushing the job. In addition you need to research the paint. Not all single stages are created equal. If you paint over primer that is still out gassing then you can end up with all sorts of issues under the base coat. This goes the same with body filler. After all is said and done you want to slap the trim and windows on the car. I've seen paint twist when someone was trying to put the trim on a car that had 4 month old paint. Trying to rush this will only lead to inferior results. Oh and by the way, when is Ken going to do a color spray out for you?cek wrote:Really? Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
I should also ask how familiar Ken is with shooting modern single stage?
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Can you explain what you mean by color spray out?
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Two weeks prior to spraying color and clear on the coupe Marco sprayed out 2 color swatches based on the example that I gave him. I approved the color and also owned it at that point. Prior to paint we did a final run through the check list which included re-fitting lights and bumpers, also the scope of work that was to be done at paint including what color went where and what texture when where. He had 30 or so photographs to go by and I needed him to sign off on each so that I knew he understood the goal.cek wrote:Can you explain what you mean by color spray out?
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
You are going to have to draw a line somewhere and there will always be someone that will ask why you didn't do X or Y.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
I feel bad for Ken, he is most likely going to have a lot more questions to answer now.
Whatever you do, don't lay your stripes down crooked or you will have to delete this entire thread.

I will add to what everyone has said, never rush bodywork. This isn't gas monkey where you have to paint a car by some auction deadline.
In my personal experience, where i have sprayed and prepped everything myself, most high build 2k primer i have come across takes 2 days to cure before you should sand, that's given the right conditions. I know the everlast fiber fill is a quick cure primer, but not many people use it. When it was cold here in az i blocked primer i thought was cured then it gassed out and made the base peel. Remember 90% of the final product is in the bodywork.

5erWest is this month.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
As I lay in bed last night thinking about this, I had the same question, Corey: "Why does he need to primer the whole car?"cddallara wrote:Obviously I'm new to this level (any level, really) of things, but if the body is perfect, what is primer for? I was always under the impression it was to help paint adhere to bare metal and/or filler.
Not arguing, just honestly curious.
I stopped by his place this morning to help remove the rest of the trim and the windshield. And I saw, you are right; there are only five spots where primer was required. Three dings on the roof, one on the rear pass door, and the area where the paint was thin on the left rear quarter, which he had already painted yesterday. He's just sanding out the paint everywhere else. So the little primer that's there will have plenty of time to set before tomorrow. It helps that the temps here are in the 90s.
We got all the trim off, the lock trim removed, the windshield out, etc... this morning.
You've inspired me though. I'm going to use this instead of satin black around the bottom of the car. Talk about a unique look!

Such a beautiful 535is. Would you think about selling your 540i M-sport? Haha my favorite car

I can't believe you left the lock cylinders in the doors.

I think it's cool you decided to go with satin red, you should have Ken add a flame to the lock cylinders, it could be the one detail that really sets it apart from the rest.
