Honestly I think the forum is great the way it is. Why change it now?

Not all families talk about politics or religion...for example, there was the Minnesota Norwegian farmer who loved his wife so much he almost told her. :D My family was kind of like that, so I don't see the value in spending time arguing about something when it's not going to change the other person's mind anyway.

Generally, I simply avoid reading the posts that either digress and are on topics that aren't car related. However, I do agree that this site has, over the years, addressed many personal and non-car related subjects with great decorum and value... so, leaving the subject matter under General Conversation "open" is a good thing. But, calling out the "assholes" is also the right thing ... and, obviously quite subjective (as to who that may be!).

I think the idea that has been raised by several responders about a possible new or re-assignment "catagory" for the more controversial subjects, i.e., politics, religion, etc., may be worth considering? It is critical that we police ourselves and decide collectively where the "line" is that shouldn't be crossed and what the consequenses should be for those that choose to regularly travel outside the accepted norms.

As for general site behavior, I think the adage that you should only say in writing what you would say to someone's face is a good one to follow. Rude, borish, and inflammatory rhetoric is both unnecessary and no value IMO.

I am under no illusions about everyone getting along. Any modicum of respect for others would be nice.
I hope you don't say that to your kids.

How would that contribute to the betterment of the board?

True. I guess resurrecting old threads keeps the board alive since we don't have many current posts to reply to.
