Long overdue update - EXHAUST

Finally got her back from the fabricators - and I could not be happier - they did a very very very nice job,

Hightlights include -
1 turbo down pipe with vband and O2 port
2 waste gate mounting and down pipe
3 exhaust including high flow cat and magnaflow muffler
4 flanged in "test pipe" for running w/o cat
5 wastegate pipe merged into main pipe
6 cold side intake pipe - cleananced around AC compressor
7 hot side dump pipe to intercooler - clearance around AC compressor
8 3" exhaust
9 post intercooler up pipe to blow-off valve pipe

Edit for the actual logic. When the WG opens up, thats the hottest exhaust coming out, dumping it into the exhaust stream after the cat reduces the back pressure seen by the turbine wheel.

OK - I had a few self induced set backs in the engine department, but at least they were caught before it became expensive - the set backs forced me to take the engine out and fix stuff. While I was there I had some parts prettied up - like the front subframe and boost pipes. I had them powder coated in a semi flat black crinkle - and I think it turned out really well.

After the fixes, I installed the pipes and took some glamour shots - enjoy.

Next task - wrap up engine compartment paint work and clutch hydralics.

Would the stock steering components worked if the turbo had not been in the way of the idler arm? Or were there other problems that arose?

I think the answer is yes - w/o a turbo on the passenger side - the stock stuff should work.

The only challenge - would be the S52 exhaust - there are a lot of headers (ebay to big dollar Supersprint) for the S52, but getting them to work in an e28 engine bay might be a challenge.

I did think about going NA on this motor - but I live at 5000 ft and am already giving up 15 to 18% on a healthy engine - so FI was the only choice.

I was thinking more along the lines of giant top mount turbo + s52

I spend 20 minutes looking for this thread lol...Im quite interested in the steering rack setup so I can ditch the steering box assembly. I ditched the turbo project and sold off the parts (still have the engine) and I plan on stuffing 2 more cylinders in the engine bay.

OK - it has been a while, but I have been working on my sled. Work has been a cast iron biotch - nothing better than work in high tech sales - where they cut the work force by 15% and you expected to take up the slack - I feel like I am being punished for being a survivor.

Recent updates include -

1 Wrapped up the power steeing plumbing with cooler and adjustment valve. This was multiple trips to the local "tubes and hoses" guy - having special lengths made. The adjustment valve needed to be mounted - so I had to make bracket - to mount to the block. The power steering cooler needed to be modified and mounted to the subframe.

2 Wrapped up the oil cooler - same deal - a few trips to the "tubes and hoses" guy to get it right.

3 Had to make a bracket to hold the idle control valve because I am using the e36 M52 idle control valve and an e36 M50 intake - and it needed to well placed because the starter and input/output ports needed to line up with the input port on the manifold.

4 Made a brackets for the dip stick - because I am using a e34 M50 sump, an e36 M50 intake manifold and a e34 dipstick - and required a fabricated bracket so it would work.

5 Made hold downs for the fuel rail - because I am using an e36 M52 rail with an e36 M50 intake.

6 Installed a turbo blanket for the hot side fo the turbo. Wrapped the turbo exhaust and waste gate tube.

7 Had a local paint shop make up can of BMW White (fill in the fancy name here). Prepped the front end for paint, filled in the holes in the grill area to accomidate euro bumper install. Did the body work - filling in the holes, sand, sand, sand, primper, sand, sand, sand, more body work, sand, sand, sand, primer again, sand, sand, sand, primer, sand, paint, sand, paint. Turned out way nicer than it needed to - it is 80% hidden by the bumpers. Stupid me.

7 Installed the engine back in the car last weekend with limited drama. A very good sign - my buddy came over and helped me and was surprised at the lack of "banging and slamming" required to install - I explained I want to run OLOA and having to work hard to do an engine fix in a remote location sounds like no fun - so if it does not work at home - I am screwed.

8 Revamped the turbo return oil line - more trips to the "tubes and hoses" guy. I am sending 1 of his kids to CSU this semester.

This weekend I will get the remaining balance of the stuff installed on the engine and start final fuel system installation.

You should keep the badge. Next time you go to a BMW track event you should take a picture of the faces of all the M3 and M5 drivers when a "525e" passes them. You have done a great job. I may be doing this soon and this is a great source of information.
