Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is

It has fins. I'll get pics next time I'm there.

Ok, that's too positive. Where is the real bkbimmer and what did you do to him?bkbimmer wrote:It will be fine. People make mistakes, nice to see he stands behind his work and is going to rectify the issue.leadphut wrote:Surprising, the welds had to be brought to his attention. I'm
sure it'll be fine.

I'm really glad we didn't do business together, we would have hated each other (if you don't already hate me). It is looking good, sir.

I think the '60 is the better-looking car, but frankly, I'm not in too much of a position to bitch. I want a '60 with a 348 and a 4-speed.
Interesting approach painting the mounting brackets. The paint looks nice!

They are both really cool cars, back to the boring BMW build.

Haha. Yeah, given where I am on my learning curve, I think I really lucked out with Ken. He's actually very willing to teach me stuff. Letting me not only watch him work, but video it is pretty much over the top.bkbimmer wrote:I'm really glad we didn't do business together, we would have hated each other (if you don't already hate me). Of course I had to help him move a fricking couch yesterday though.

You did wear a respirator and all of the protective gear, right? Did you put a respirator on your phone?

Yes. No.wkohler wrote:You did wear a respirator and all of the protective gear, right? Did you put a respirator on your phone?
Now my phone is kustom.

The paint is color matched to his toolbox, too!
Re-assembly of those freshly painted pieces is going to be so much fun - like seeing a puzzle finally coming together!

Ken finished all the welding this week and is almost done with surface prep. I didn't get any pics but the tow hooks look tits. The bumpers are at my place and the color match seems right on. The truth moment will be when he brings the hood by.
Plan is still to get car into the paint booth next weekend.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
So, why bring the hood by and not take the car to the hood?
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
I have room to store it safely. He doesn't, really.wkohler wrote:So, why bring the hood by and not take the car to the hood?
Also, we want to make sure the paint color is right before ordering more paint, which we need to do.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Well, as long as it can be transported safely. Just seems like a big risk.

That's actually a great point.wkohler wrote:Well, as long as it can be transported safely. Just seems like a big risk.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
No risk, no reward.
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Tomorrow we will have the moment of truth of color matching. Right now the hood & bumpers look slightly brighter than the original paint. We're going to mount the hood and back the car into natural light to really compare because just holding parts up in florescents is just making us nervous.
This is the 2nd reason why we wanted to transport the hood back to my house. We need to order more paint to finish the job and if the tint isn't perfect we need to a) adjust it, and b) repaint at least the hood (the bumpers parts might be ok; we'll make that call).
I knew going in that using single-stage would be harder to match, so I'm not too freaked out... if it isn't right i'm committed to getting it right. But I am anxious.

It looks pretty but it isn't going to match.

I think it will be fine because the hood is horizontal and the rest vertical. this way you don't see much difference in color.

Wow - great work Charlie. Yet another thread that eats up the clock. Love the work, and I hope the color matches up well.....
Re: Vlad: The Zinno '87 535is (Euro Bumpers!)
Ken & I got the hood on. Looks really, really good in the garage light and with a camera flash. But we both think it may be just a smidgen light so we're going to back the car out into the sun tomorrow (hopefully).
He made more progress on the rear...
And the welding and filling is complete up front...
