Inline oil cooler from Bell

What do you guys think of this? It's advertised as a filter and cooler with measured reduction in oil temps of 25F when placed in a position that receives air flow.

What is the volume and flow; without a size reference it hard to evaluate it. I like the idea and have seen similar ones for power steering and automatic transmission applications.

What is inside of it Todd? If it has vanes or something to create turbulence and speed up the flow then 25* might be realistic but if it just a filter housing I kind of doubt the 25*.

It looks pretty small, but nothing to judge it by size-wise

How does it connect to the engine? Remote filter type arrangement?

So from inlet to outlet it measures a 25f drop all the time?
Easy to measure yourself I don't think it's good for them to
exaggerate.

That seems like allot to cool for alittle thing though.

The fins need to be thinner and there need to be a hell of a lot more of them. It's the same concept as a laminova intercooler element but it has hardly any surface area.

25F? Not a chance.

i don't see 25* unless its the size of a football to go with a good amount of fluid flow

Perhaps a portion of the temp drop comes from the time the oil travels to the filter (which is placed in direct airflow) in addition to the added travel time it takes for the oil to flow back to the turbo. I dont know what the flow rate is of oil in this setup under pressure, but I'm sure there is an equation out there that could aid in determining its effectiveness.

It really all depends on what it looks like on the inside.I highly doubt that its just a tube that the oil flows through, at least i hope not.If there are small diameter holes combined with a doubling back of oil flow one or more times it might be pretty effective.


Edit. Just saw that its supposedly a filter as well.Hmmm

The largest fitting size is -4 AN or 3/8 hose barb. I have my doubts also but respect Corky. I would think the 50 micron filter would reduce oil flow...

A 25F drop to the turbo might be true if those are -4 fittings. That will do almost nothing for total engine oil temps.

Now that I see that it is for the turbo feed line and not for the whole engine, that should work just fine. So long as you don't plumb it from the head where the pressure is already pretty low, the pressure drop should not be too great for a plain bearing turbo, and it might actually help.

That said, you could just use a traditional small oil cooler if you wanted. If you want an even greater temperature drop, you can make one of those, but just make it longer and skinnier for greater surface area. The filter element thing is readily available from places like McMaster Carr.
