Is there any disadvantage to placing the intercooler radiator far (+10ft) away from the heat exchanger?

The E28 is short on space up in the front and i'm considering something silly.

well on the plus side it'll have bigger capacity from the extra long hoses.

They're a little over 15 feet bumper to bumper if memory serves. The only downside I can think of to this scheme is the plumbing and how you'd get adequate airflow over the heat exchanger. Depending on exactly where you're thinking of mounting it, there might be other downsides like susceptibility to being hit by road debris.

I was going to try to find some space in the rear behind the RH axle for a free air cooler or build a small box in the trunk or under the rear seat with a fan pushing air through SCAT tubing to it. The spare tire well would be a perfect place to create such a thing but I just can't loose the spare given my history of poor luck.

Water-to-air works fine up front. Why reinvent the wheel (or intercooler)?

I want to retain the factory AC and get away from all of the heat in the front front of the car.

AAA card vice the spare?

I believe BMW would put some coolers in the back of the car if you do some research. Such as the CSL, on that note I think it was utilizing the large flares for this. I've seen people make aluminum boxes for like the trunk and run fans and napa ducts. It would be a ton of work no matter what IMO. Also check out Toyota MR2 "Trunk intercooler" It is a popular modification for them and it may give you some design ideas.

There isn't really a whole lot of airflow under the car if you are thinking of putting a heat exchanger back there. You would pretty much need to do some ducting to get air to where you want it, which means cutting up the car (you don't want to do that.) I'd do it to an E30 coupe, because you could run ducts to the rear quarter windows, but your car is too nice to hack up when there are perfectly good ways of doing it otherwise.

I tried to get some napa ducts at O'reilly's. All they had was harteage and alpeena stuff.

My TCD setup with water to air retains the factory AC and doesn't run hot. I don't see the problem.
