My turbo build (UPDATE 5/5/13 pics added)

Post by KarlM30 »

I've been gathering some parts for my turbo build but still have some questions mostly about tuning.

Plan making a top mount turbo set up looking for a modest 300 whp at first replacing the headgasket and studs and cranking it to 350 whp maybe 375 but I'd be plenty happy with 350.
Set up
-tcd top mount manifold (thanks Todd!)
-turbonetics 62-1 turbo
-turbosmart 38mm wastegate
-forge Motorsport recirculating valve
-ebay A/A intercooler
-Aem wideband

Need
-injectors
- tune
-exhaust
-vacuum lines, oil lines, random gaskets

QUESTION....
-anyone use ostrich 2.0 on our cars to burn a custom chip?
Will ostrich work? Thanks

I would recommend the megasquirt 2, get one assembled. Get the color wiring harness, it's no harder than a car stereo to wire up. Get a wideband, and let the learning begin.
good luck

So I can get rid of the war chip? What's the max power I can max with a tcd chip and rrfpr?

Around 300 whp. The real issue is injector size. 30lb injectors are the largest you can run on a chip and rrfpr. Anything larger and you will have difficulties leaning them out at idle and part throttle.

How much did your MS setup cost? I've been trying to get a hold of Peter florance but he has gotten back to me. Was yours straight plug and play? What you do to make it work?
Thanks for all the info guys

If you don't want to make your own harness to run megasquirt, there is the option of adapting a late M30B35 harness or the super eta (88 and later 528e) harness to your car. Then you can buy a DIYPNP kit from DIYautotune.

This is the route that I'm taking with my E24. I've got an ETA harness and the ECU assembled, I just need to source a few more parts before I start installing everything.

I purchased my setup used from Todd at TCD. Peter Florance built my P&P harness and dme. I couldn't be happier with the setup. It's not 100% P&P because you have wire up you wideband O2 sensor (different wiring depending on which one you choose) and boost control solenoid along with a few other misc wires for the cluster. But as far as the fuse box goes, it plugged right in.

As far as sensor changes go. You will need the crank sensor, bracket, and harmonic balancer from a M30b35. The sensors on the bell housing of the trans are no longer used.

The rest of the sensors were retained from the B34 iirc. Obviously the AFM goes in the garbage as you are switching to a MAP sensor. I would highly recommend adding barbed fittings for vacuum lines on the side of the intake manifold if you have it off. Once you boost the car you will need vacuum sources for wastegate, bov, map, boost gauge, fpr, etc. Having dedicated ports on the side of the intake manifold where oil wont clog them up is very helpful and prevents eventual nightmares down the road.

Just curious how it fits flipped over?
Also, forget so called plug and play installs, imho it only complicates things. you can get an ms2 assembled from diy motorsports, get a color harness, buy the gm sensors, and install it like a car stereo, it doesn't get simpler than that.

Stock harness is very good. Good grounds, good shielding. Wouldn't just trash it if I were you. Pretty easy to wire it into MS.

I was looking to try out ostrich 2.0 to tune for the turbo. Any input or if this will work on motronic 1.0a?
