Forged Aftermarket Rods or No Forged Aftermarket Rods

I've read very little about the stock M30 rods, a few accounts have people saying they are factory forged and can handle ~500hp. Does anyone here know if theres any truth to that? And does it apply to all M30 variations?

At this point I'm looking at aiming for ~20PSI boost with 8.5:1 forged CP pistons and ARP hardware.

So change out rods for an aftermarket forged set?

Hello.
From my readings on the internet, torque is what
bends rods and hp is what breaks pistons.

I'm not sure what power my engine was producing but
it's maxing out a 59mm turbo taking up to 27psi and
broke a pistons ring land. Rods where not bent.

It's a pretty small turbo for an m30 so torque wasn't lacking.

If the tune is good, change nothing. Fancy parts are sometimes a crutch for bad setup. I made some huge tuning mistakes with my m30 and it held up to hell just fine so far.

RPM bends rods and detonation kills piston ring lands. Stock rods are forged and up to the task. Limit revs to 6800rpm.

Takes some serious det to kill ring lands too, going by what I've done to the M20. Unlikely to do just by accident, since you should lift immediately in the case of audible detonation.

I had that engine for maybe 3-4 years seeing
some crazy detonation in the beginning.


So if there's no detonation there's no need for forged pistons, ever?

Longevity of stock rods and pistons are dependent on how good of tune you have and limits of the fuel being used.
Forged internals will fail with a crappy tune.
