ABS module service or rebuild question

Do members of this forum recommend service to or rebuild of the e28 Automatic Braking System Module? I have mine out of an e28 535is and would like to have it serviced while body and paint work is completed. Members who have used an ABS module rebuilder or service provider please share your thoughts and experiences on the value of having it done.

I rebuilt mine on the bench without any prior experience. There is a thread somewhere on here that I used with pictures and instructions but it's fairly straightforward. I found quite a bit of congealed gunk in my unit when I did it. Honestly not sure it made much of a difference though.

I saw someone that rebuilds them and they look like it came out of the factory but it carries a hefty price tag of $1,599.

Half the price of above but a fully functional rebuild:

Good to know. I definitely don't have a show car.

That is actually a good deal considering the labor involved and time. I did mine really on a whim more than anything else, a sort of 'while I'm in here' task while I had the whole engine out; what was one more system? It's pretty straight-forward but does require some specific tools and plenty of patience. I ended up having to find a replacement since the brake line threads got stripped on two of the in-ports ( don't rush the re-installation).
So in comparison, paying that guy $600 seems worth every penny to me (provided his service is actually good).

The thing about the ABS system is it's something you rarely, if ever, use. And when you need it, you REALLY need it but it's something you will only ever use a few times in the life of an average driven car. Kind of like that life vest under the airplane seat or an airbag in newer cars. Few people here remember the days before ABS and had to learn threshold braking as a matter of survival (especially in a drum brake car); it's a habit that is ingrained in those who learned it when we started to drive our first cars. I still use it to this day.

[Of course I'm talking about this generation of cars and ABS systems; I know that newer cars (like my E39) use ABS as part of the active drive control systems (Dynamic Stability Control, Active Stability Control, etc.). So having a fully functioning ABS pump is not just a good idea but essential just to drive the car.]
