Good idea to have this section, maybe we can get some current 524td mileage posts? I always wonder how these old girls are doing.
Last fall I drove a friends 530d in Germany... I want this car! Quick and when my foot wasn't in it (love its torque) we recorded 34.5 mpg (6.8 L/100km) on a easy paced 840km round trip, measured by liters pumped divided into tripmeter reading. No I-Drive BS numbers.
U.S. needs to get its diesel fuel act together, so we can have such machines here, please.
I want a BMW 530d!

That's for sure! I didn't get to drive a BMW, but did drive the 150hp TDI Golf wagon and an Audi A3 Turbo diesel in the Netherlands and what great cars. I Asked my local VW dealer here if the 150hp TDI was coming to America some day and VW said perhaps, if we ever get our diesel fuel cleaned-up!
I guess our oil companies aren't making enough money to accomplish this.

My 524td has 285k on the ticker, It just recently developed a small wristpin knock. I am going to perform a tear down and replace the rings and worn components. Once I get it torn down I will report my findings and I'm certain it will be like most BMW engines showing very little wear at high mileage. I would like to locate a 524d intake if NE1 knows where I might find one. I also need a 524td flywheel to perform a stick conversion.

ULSD is around the corner
Latest info I have indicated that ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) will be at the refinery level this summer and trickle down to the retail pump around September-October or so. This will be even cleaner than the Euro stuff so they won't be able to use the "dirty fuel" excuse. My take is it's all about high market demand in Europe vs. lukewarm reception for diesels here. I have to say though, I think the tide is turning....
