I have a chance to purchase some very nice 17" Style 5 wheels....I'm told that they fit the e28 hub with no centering hub adaptor needed.

Can anyone tell me the typical offset of these wheels? Also, what would the going rate for a nice set of 4-wheels only (obviously don't want to overpay).

thanks in advance

if the style 5 wheels you speak of came from a E39 5-series(as most of them do)--then the hub bore for those wheels is larger--74mm IIRC, so you WILL need hubcentric rings to fit an E28.

My style 5 E39 wheels are 17x8, ET 20 if that helps. Check the E28 wheel and tire tutorial for tire size fitment. My 235/45/17's fit just barely, and my car has factory rolled fender lips in the rear. I doubt they'd work as-is on a US car.

You can get hubcentric rings from Tirerack, Wheel Exchange, etc. The size is most likely in the archives.

As for price--depends on motivation of the seller, condition, etc. Expect anywhere from 2-300 for bargain wheels, to 1200+ for refinished, excellent examples, and anything in between. The wheels are always popping up for sale, so look for a good deal if you don't have one already.

I believe there were 17" style 5s available on the E31. Of course, I've never seen a set myself, so who knows. It is more than likely these are the E39 style 5s.

The 17x8s are offset 20, and the 17x9s are ET26 (quite rare).

As for price, it's all over the place. Ray in Phoenix picked up a gorgeous set for $400 with tires, but I've seen them in the $1k range as well. What is the price on this particular set?

Mine sold approximately 1.5 months back for $2250 IIRC. Set of five all refinished and with sexy, sexy tires. The price range is really all over the board, as style 5's are becoming increasingly popular with the E36 guys (well were popular, a recent fad.)

Usually $800-$1,100 with tires on ebay in good condition. If tires are brand new or nearly new, count on paying in higher end of range, and if tires have less life left, then closer to lower end of range.

I sold a set on ebay with 75% remaining treadwear for $850. Wheels were in very decent shape, except a few nicks and scrapes here and there.

Ive seen some that were an option for e32/34s in canada? with the e28 correct 72.56mm hub bore, some were even staggered. The most common are the e39 take offs with a 74.1 hub bore. and they did in deed have a 20mm offset

yep

these may be the Canada option wheels cause the seller says that they will not fit the hub on an e39.

These wheels originate in NY state, so, sounds likely...personally, I like the fact that no centering rings are required..they are a pain if you ask me.
