Header coatings...which one to use?
Not sure if they are smog legal in Cali...my guess is no. I'll be waiting
until I smog the car to install them, and will either have to find an
understanding smog guy, or swap back to the stock manifold when
the next smog rolls around.
What's the hp gain? Ummm, I don't know. But I'd expect them to help
quite a bit more on my new euro L-block motor than they would on a
stock us-spec m30. I don't expect them to increase hp much, but am
hoping they will broaden the power band.

raj, i had mine ceramic coated. i have had no problems with them since then and they cost less than a buck twenty to have done.
keep in mind that mine are not the long tube hartge headers so they were probably cheaper than yours will be, but i've been pleased with mine so far. plus they coated the inside for better heat reduction outside the headers and also to help prevent rust through. it helps too. less than ten minutes after i get done running the car real hard, i can actually touch the headers with bare hands and not come back with third degree burns.

I really don't care what brand of header is on my car, and if you (or
anybody else with a real Hartge) wanted to buy them, I'd sell, as long
as I got enough out of them to get myself a set of new headers.

Raj, they are custom headers made by a good friend who works for Dale Earnhardt Incorporated. I don't know anything about ireland's headers but these things work magic with my engine. they are small tube headers which build torque rather than real high end horsepower and i love them.
I did have them coated locally. They actually did them and had them back to me in less than a week and i was super impressed with the results and the quality. in the pic they had a fresh coating of dust from sanding the car but cleaned up nice and shiny again. i just hav'nt had a chance to get any better pics lately.

I had a set of shorty headers on my E30 track car (M20) that were ceramic coated inside and out. I also wrapped them with fiberglass header wrap. They were on the car for 3 years and showed no rust, etc. I think the coating did reduce the heat they put out, however, it was easily scratched and chipped.

one thing I noticed about JetHot Coating is that you can actually touch the header when the car is running, the coating is that good, it stays Cold which if you remember was a problem Duke ran into, the heat from the headers heating up his Brake Lines and him losing brake pedal firmness....I say spend the $$ on the Jet Hot but I have not touched another set of headers done by other companies so I can speak for them....

i have sidepipes on my 80' corvette. yeah, they are amazingly painful if you catch your leg on them, but they just fit old corvettes and cobras so perfectly. they kinda look like functional side skirts on the vette. i do not like the factory ones though, mine are hooker super comp headers where you see each cylinder's pipe come into the collector on the side of the car.
on a side note, brad, if you want headers and are not picky to which brand, i may be willing to part with mine in a few months when my new stuff starts to come together.

Raj, I had my '86 Yamaha FZ750's Yoshimura headers, tail pipe, and internal muffler components all Jet-Hot coated before using them. It cost about $160.00 and was worth every penny. The pipes were visible to anyone and everyone being on a half-fairing style bike, and they looks just like new years after the job. The only thing that scratched them was a rather high speed bump, other than that, there was no flaking or anything that harmed the coating. Spend the extra bucks, it'll be worth it everytime you look under the hood.

Brad...not sure what size the headers are. I wasn't aware they came in two different sizes. Anyway, they should be here this weekend or early next week, and I'll let you know when they arrive. Still not sure if I want to sell them, though. BTW, if you're building this monster motor, why would you only be interested in the smaller-diameter headers? Jus' curious.
