More on the engine management setup, please?

How about a later bosch 413 system off a NVM50? I've thought about the possibility of doing that with a nice blow through and a TRM tune...

I'd swap to an E23, E24, E28, or E32 engine bay. You'll have a lot more room to work.

How is that ECU going to work out? I'm legitemately curious.

I had a couple of choices for engine management

Autronic SMC
Megasquirt 1 V3.0
EMS from 2002 VR6 golf= Motronic ME7.1

Ive had great luck with the Autronics, not so great with ms1's and have had good results with turbo VW's. The VW (ME7) ecu uses a 60-2 crank trigger so i thought it wouldn't be to hard to make it work with my engine. I used a newer M30 crank pulley and made a custom sensor mount.
There are a lot of reason that i chose to use this ecu instead of stand alone but the major reason is that my new job consists of tuning these types of ecus (Motronic's).

Here are some of the features of the ME7 ECU:
Closed loop wideband control
Advanced knock sensor tuning capabilities
Waste spark ignition
Gas pedal to throttle angle programming
(BTW ive also converted my e30 to drive by wire)
I'm in the middle of reprogramming a over boost throttle cut
OBD2 port for codes and data logging
Adaptive fueling at start up

Also is something different. I can always change the EMS down the road.

Heres a video from a couple of months ago when i first go it running

Beautiful manifold you got there. Did you custom build it?

I am very interested in the use of the VW ECU, there are some really good off the shelf tunes for the VR6.

I know it doesn't really matter because you can just switch things around or change them in the tune, but the VR is technically a V6, so that'll be a little different.

are you just going to try a 12v 2.8/2.9L or stroker tune for boost?

I'm sort of liking this idea, ECU's and Harnesses to hack up can be had for very cheap money.

You may want to check the firing order and firing timing on that VW stuff before you consider it. If they are not even fire engines, you can't use this setup on an I6.

a 12v VR6 uses an inline 6 firing order of 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4... same as an M30...

I'm really looking forward to seeing this...

The more important issue was even or odd firing, but it looks like the VR6 motor is even firing.

The car is currently running strong with the VR6 ecu and wiring

When are you putting the turbo on?

What are you using for your AFR gauge? Looks custom & very compact.

\edit

If you go wasted spark, you might be interested in a dizzy block off plate HERE.

As you know its not an easy fit with a M30 in an e30 with a bunch of other parts . Ive been waiting for parts and playing with how i want the intercooler . Also I'm waiting on getting my valve cover back from getting a -10 fitting welded on for the crank case setup. Besides that I'm going to try to recalibrate the ecu this week for the new injectors and try to install the turbo this weekend.

Here's a couple of updated pictures

I moved the new electronic throttle body to the drivers side to help with IC piping.

Ive cleaned up the wiring some more but dont have any pictures of it.

You will find that the M30 is so noisy that the sensors are useless.

Get a E34 engine wire harness cover/box, it will hide all of those wires.

So i got out my saw, hammer, torch...etc so i could fit this manifold on and to my surprise i needed not a one. The manifold fit perfectly!

Image

Now the intercooler on the other side took some work!

Image

I took the valance off to get painted and the intercooler pipes are off getting bead rolled. I should have the car back in the next day or two from getting the exhaust done and then ill be ready to hit the road!
